They won’t have practice questions for Level II this year. I hope they can come up with the rest of their products soon enough and do as good a job as they did for Level I

Hello dear friends. Elan gets lots of good reviews and I have seen their free trial. My question is can anyone compare them to Stalla and Kaplan.

Have any of you used more than one provider? Is it wise to do that?

You can use any of Schweser Stalla and Elan to go with the official books and you’ll be alright as long as you put the hours in.

I just purchased the videos and questions….

My personal feeling is the material is VERY GOOD. The videos help me a lot, I know mostly all this material from my undergrad so reading it is to time consuming and I dont want to worry about reading 3000 pages of material. The videos are great for learning how to do all the calculations but I think you will have to go over the books for more of the qualitative stuff

Just printed out the entire Econ text book from Elan. Going to check it out this week and see if/how it helps. I liked the video samples but I prefer reading and highlighting stuff rather than watching videos.

I’ll give my opinion.

1. I only read elan for the readings. I read CFA books when elan wasn’t clear on something or failed to include something I felt was important. I understood the material fine with Elan. I also had a background in finance and accounting, so I can’t say if you will as well. I was probably subconciously filling in the blanks left by Elan. I didn’t know much about fixed income, for example, and I pretty much didn’t understand at all a lot of the concepts presented (only in the most superficial way – I knew it but didn’t feel like I understood it) in Elan’s text.
2. Elan’s formula list was really helpful. I memorized that.
3. Be sure you read the erratum. They made some pretty major errors in the readings and the formula list.
4. I didn’t feel the eleventh hour guide was really helpful. I would instead just look over and skim the most relevant stuff in the readings themselves.
5. The mock exams by Elan were helpful. They weren’t exactly representative – probably harder.
6. Really quick response from customer service whenever I had questions and e-mailed them.

hi

it may just be me or the availability schedule, but most of my notes will not open. I am working on FRA right now and i want to follow along with elan notes but it won’t open. is this not available yet? I click on corporate finance, and it opens, but when i select another topic it will not open.

Thanks!

Works fine for me… FRA Videos, practice questions, notes, everything. Try emailing them?

Are you a June 2012 candidate? If so, it’ll probably be different for you.

Crush818: Stop being a cheapsh!t. If you want to use their stuff then buy it for yourself. No one in their right mind would share their Elan stuff with you because its got your name and other details watermarked on every page.

Hey, I am sitting for June 2012. I emailed them and they said everything should be up in September.

I just used them June 2012 and passed easily. I was expecting to pass since I felt well-prepared and in my opinion, Elan’s materials were excellent expecially the study guides and videos.

I hadn’t heard much about them until I came across this forum, but with their prices and quality I would encourage those looking for supplementary study material to check our their free quant materials and take the leap.

Good luck!

I think their produsts are excellent aside from some audio issues with some of the lectures.

BrightStar's picture

They just brought in Peter Olinto as lead instructor. He is very highly-rated as well so its a step in the right direction for them.

I personally really liked the videos done by Basit Shajani. But apparently everybody whose been in the program has amazing things to say about Peter Olinto as well.

I’d also be interested in hearing the differences betewen the two. Many of my senior folks used only schweser and have recommened that to me and unlike people on this forum, they have not heard about Elan Guides before.

an-alyst's picture

@nikki: i used Elan in June 2012 for level 1, and I also had never heard about them until I started coming to this forum. It’s maybe because they are new and schweser has been around for ages. Anyway, I believe their lecture videos and the mock exams are really amazing and offcourse better than schweser. Have you read the complete thread? There are many people above who have given their opinions on elan vs schweser.

Be not afraid of going slowly, be afraid only of standing still.

Well i have used both for Level I. Studied from Schweser initially, but then after hearing good reviews about Elan on AF and trying out their free samples, i switched to Elan.

The main difference between the two, and this is only my opinion, lies in the way they both summarizes the curriculum. Schweser has a bad habit of explaining stuff a bit differently than CFAI curriculum, whereas Elan summarizes the stuff very skillfully from the CFAI’s text. They make the content so much easier to understand by sometimes combining or even breaking down the LOSs just so that the flow of the reading remains intact.

Schweser has also developed a bad reputation of missing out topics every other year which later gets tested (Read old threads for that on AF). This might not bother many of the candidates as those topics usually constitute a very small percentage, but for me that is a huge turn off!

Thanx guys for the help.
