Unless you live in a *really* bad area, you’re more likely to die from accidental gunshot then by some robber shooting you.
True, but that’s where training and familiarity come in to play. As well as being calm, you gotta be calm. People panic and shoot family members in their home thinking their intruders sometimes. If you’re a paranoid / freak out type person, owning firearms is probably not a safe bet. I’ve been shooting since I was six (grew up on a farm). Handling firearms is second nature to me.
On the other hand, I finally know how other people feel about my owning guns. My ex’s used to always say they didn’t like knowing it was in the house because it freaked them out, and I thought that was dumb, because to me guns are just guns, I’ve always had them around. Growing up in the sticks, we have pictures of us at 12 years old twirling these things on our fingers while we’re studying (unloaded). But I’ve never owned any kitchen hardware since I moved out on my own at 18, so no pots / pans, cooking utensiles, etc. And my new GF just bought a bunch and a set of the big knives. And I told her last night they were creeping me out because I’m only used to seeing kitchen knives in horror movies, so it weirds me out when I see them laying around the house. Kinda funny.
^ Respect. I just want one on hand in the black swan event of my apartment door getting kicked in by armed theives/thugs/crackheads/etc. Sure I could dial 911, but I would probably be cold by the time they arrived.
Yeah, in the country thats why everyone has guns in their house, gonna be 10-15 minutes till the cops show up (at best) and everyone knows it. Of course there’s little crime because everyone also knows everyone else has guns in their house. Personally, I’d say if you’re not gonna carry, get a nice full frame pistol like the beretta 92 or a Smith and Wesson M&P 40 (or the M&P 9 = 9mm version of the same gun, I LOVE this gun, my Dad and brother both just got one), H&K makes great stuff too. I personally hate glocks, I think they feel cheap when you shoot them. But hey, just get whatever feels comfortable in your hand. The advantage to a pistol (vs a shotgun) is you can stash it in a nightstand so it’s easy to grab, it doesn’t take up a lot of space, and you can take it to indoor ranges and shoot it for fun. Most people won’t bother taking their home defense shotgun out to the range and they’re no good for shooting clays, so they never get any use. The #1 factor in being able to safely and effectively defend your home isn’t having the best gun, but rather just having one you know how to use. If you have a significant other that’s living in the house, make sure you take her to the range several times to shoot the gun as well until she’s familiar with the gun and loses her fear of it as well. I prefer 9mm to 40’s because girls are more comfortable with them (slightly less kick) and the ammo’s much cheaper. As I said, if you ask me who wins a shootout, the guy with the 40, or the 9, I’d say the guy who uses their gun more. So I prefer cheaper ammo (9mm) over more impact (40mm). And the 45 is just stupid. WAAAY to heavy and clunky frame, very few shells in a clip (large bullets single stacked).
My “Have you been drinking?” thread was nuked so I need to bump this one up. I got a text from an old blondie I used to play around with. She is on her way to court for a DWI charge and wanted help from me. They say being black is just as good as being a certified paralegal when it comes to criminal defense.
Anyways, I told her she’s fxcked and should simply plea it down to a lessor charge. She replied back disagreeing and said she has a good defense for her case. I ax what it is. She then says, “My BF made me drive, it’s coercion.”
#facepalm!
(Maybe that would work for paris hilton, but not this blondie, I shagged her 2 STDs and 45lbs ago)
Update. She plead not guilty and plans to stick to her boyfriend made her do it excuse. What is the AF consensus on the outcome. She did not take my advice to plead no contest and assume a lessor charge, fine, or both.
^I agree with you, never fight it unless you have an actual leg on which to stand. Drunk driving laws are strict and made to be easily convictable. She’s gonna get nailed for sure, she would have to litterally prove her boyfriend forcibly coerced her into doing it, in which case (and there’s no way they’re gonna buy it), the BF would get nailed with both the DUI and some sort of charges related to kidnapping. How is any of that better. She should have taken the first offense guilty plea and they probably would have let her off with a decent fine and a few classes. Now she’s going to have to hire a lawyer, then she’ll get nailed anyways, but probably with a similar fine, but now the lawyer too. Often if you’re willing to work out a plea, they have some sort of first offense program like in PA, called ARD where it never shows up on your record and you have no official conviction. But there’s a slightly greater fine involved.
Anyhow, long story short, she’s gonna end up looking like an idiot.
Got a second interview lined up. Hopefully all goes well, and I can get out of this place.
Taking a gun class on Tuesday night, so I can learn how to properly shoot. I’m a terrible shot right now and need help.
Congrats on the engagement again.
How did the interview go?
Do you have your conceal and carry permit? I want to get that once I’m in a state that allows it.
Interview went well - I got the job. It’s in IR for a company in transition. I figure that it’ll be interesting for about a year or two as we make the big move. After that, I’m not sure if I’ll want to go back to strategy and/or m&a, or if I’ll want to go do something completely different.
I don’t live in a state that allows concealed carry, but I would probably get the permit if we ever do pass the law.
I grew up huntin pheasant, so I’m really comfortable with shotguns, but I’m like a fish out of water when it comes to pistols.
I like Adam Carolla’s thought on keeping a shotgun for home defense: you make the first shot a blank, if firing that doesn’t scare the intruder off, then you hit him with rock salt (it’s non-lethal), if he’s still not running for the door, then you hit him with the live ammo. Personally, I might start with the rock salt immediately. Sure, you may hit your wife or kids with a shot, but I figure that it’s their fault for scaring you in the middle of the night.
Unless you live in a *really* bad area, you’re more likely to die from accidental gunshot then by some robber shooting you.

Dude, anyone who has been around guns as long as you claim knows that you always treat a weapon like it is loaded. ALWAYS. I don’t care how many times you checked to see if it was loaded you would NEVER twirl a weapon on you finger like it was the movies. Or act like a weapon is “second nature.” You know this as well so please don’t give me a smartass answer. That’s how accidents happen and why politicians want to kill gun ownership rights.
I still do it actually. I don’t point guns at people even if they are unloaded, I do abide by that rule. But if you twirl a pistol (which I actually do loaded too, with the hammer down the force of the spin is not near enough to pull the trigger) the only time the gun is pointed at you is when it’s at your shoulder (barrel upwards in the spin), at which point your finger is on the trigger guard and not the trigger. I’ve never had anything resembling a close call. You just have to know what you’re doing. And I’m sorry, but you have to be pretty stupid to visually check the chamber of a pistol and not see the bullets. It’s physically impossible. It’s like saying you should never drive on single lane roads because a three inch movement of your hand on the steering wheel could send you into a telephone pole at 50 mph. God Blake, you’re such a little b*tch getting your panties in a bunch about things that don’t concern you, haha. I mean, there’s an entire sport of trick shooting built around this stuff.
Anyhow, I actually do think guns implicitely benefit society as a whole, the second ammendment was designed to maintain government accountability. Additionally, urban dwellers always fail to understand that without firearms in the country, everyone is left defenseless at homes since police responses take 10-20 minutes at best. Not to mention, I know low income families in the country, that the meat they get from hunting makes a significant impact on the family’s ability situation each year.
no one is invading anybody…..we’re very safe here in north america….having guns easily accessible just allows for punks to access them and shoot innocent people…..i don’t think guns have advanced humanity as a whole overall….

Ah, Canada, where everyone lives next to the part of the US the Americans don’t want to live in. If global warming truly takes hold Canada is going be part of the US very quickly, whether through migration or annexation. As someone who has been robbed at gunpoint (with a Beretta pointed directly at my head by some tweaker), I think that hand guns should be limited but assault rifles should be legal. I don’t like concealment. If somebody has a gun, I want to know it and rifles are hard to hide.

Essentially, criminals involved in the drug trade motiviated by profit will always have guns and you will probably never be able to stop them. However, typically they only kill each other I think what enhanced gun control would reduce the gun violence attributable to nuts/crimes of passion/accidents.
