What do you guys think of the Rolex Explorer, I know nothing about watches.

I am extremely sad to say that the watch I referenced in this thread was stolen just a couple of weeks ago. In a bizarre twist it was stolen the night before my father died (he gave it to me). It was almost like the loss of it killed him (though he didn’t know it). At least that is what it feels like to me.

Though it had considerable value it was worth a 100x more than that to me. That watch was either on his wrist or mine since 1968.

Blacked out watches (vapor deposit method, etc.) are cool until the deposit wears away… then it looks like a POS… and you have ruined a $3K+ watch that you paid another $500+ to get a custom PVD job on. Blacking out a watch is the horological equivalent of getting 22 chrome spinners.

that’s brilliant! spinners on an all black watch…………………….iamneil you are the genius of this generation

Hope this helps

WHOA Buddy. That is a great time piece! I rock an old Omega SeaMaster Deville (old means 1970s), but I love it. Most new watches are too “5TIMEZONE/BAROMETER/STUPIDSTUFF” for my taste. But, that might be a nice present to myself if I ever get a real job and pass all the CFA sections.

I have an Omega Seamaster Chrono and love the thing. I get a lot of compliments on it.

For a more “sporty” watch I really want to get a Tag Grand Carrera with leather.

More classic I was thinking of a Longines Master Retrograde.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, check out Ball watches.

I can’t stand your Keynsian point of view, but I admire your taste in watches. The grand carrera and just about any Ball are badaz.

LOL. My eyes are certainly bigger than my wallet (or at least the portion of it that my wife will let me spend).

It’s amusing, I go through these stages where I want to upgrade certain parts of my wardrobe. Suits, pants, shirts. Then shoes. Followed by watches.

I only like certain watches from each company. I don’t like many Tags, but the GC is awesome. Black face with a brown strap = Boss. There’s a couple Balls that I like but many are too “out there”.

I can completely relate to lxwarr. Once you start buying watches, you must buy more. Must buy more…

Rofl. Not at all what I meant. It just means don’t rush into things too quickly.

I think if it’s obvious you haven’t banked your first mil yet, you look pretty foolish wearing an expensive watch.

I couldn’t justify spending more than $500 on a watch, as I’d really regret it if I lost it. Plus I almost always check my phone for the time (stupid, I know), so the watch does nothing more than look good and provide the little extra weight on my wrist that I’m used to.

I got the all silver Tissot in the link below. It’s simple, which is why I like it.

For me a watch should have a “soul”, so it needs to be mechanical to be interesting (quartz is too precise and is pure functionality).

Besides mechanical I always look at the movement, and for me a watch is only interesting if the movement is completely inhouse made. I dislike the watch brands that just buy the movements from another manufacturer, put it in a case they bought somewhere else and charge you 500-1000 USD for combining it for you.

And the history of the watch manufacturer is important. I dont want a brand that is just in the market for a couple of years and pretends to have an interesting history.

Brands of interest so far:
Rolex
Patek
AP
VC
JLC
Seiko (higher range)

Good thing about a high-end mechanical watch is that prices are increasing each year, so if you buy a Rolex or PP now you might be able to get the same price (or a bit more) for it when you resell it in a couple of years.

I’ve looked at the Rolex Submariner anniversary edition for this very reason. The annual (or nearly annual) MSRP increase keep the used prices very high. If you want to resell it, you can get almost what you paid for it, so it isn’t costing you all that much (except for the opportunity cost of not investing the money or whatever, this is a finance forum after all).

I think I want an Omega PO but don’t want to pay full freight.  Anyone selling?

Anybody have an opinion on Ebel as a brand or on this watch in particular?  I just like its clean, simple look:

^ I like Ebel as a brand since both of my grandparents have nice ones that I’ll likely inherit.

That one you posted is nice and clean, just not really my style. I find myself partial to sport watches.

I have two awesome watches.  They both tell me the time and date.

This is my dress watch:

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-A158W-1-Classic-Digital-Bracelet/dp/B000GAYQ...

——————————————–

And here is my casual watch:

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means--except for getting off his back.

Eh. I also have that Timex Iron Man watch, but different color. I use it when I play outside, or sometimes when taking an airplane, as it doesn’t set off the metal detector. I am actually about to go running and I am wearing it right now…

there is a stark disconnect between the self-reported average comp for AF members in that other thread and some of the expensive watches discussed here. my theory is that there must be two different non-intersecting subsections of AF posting in both threads
