Why should I hire you over this candidate?

What is the best response to this question?

I would start by saying:

I don’t know about the other candidate but as a new grad, I:

  • positive adjectives (examples)
  • experience (example)

Add a joke such as I’ll make you (hiring manager) look smart and make their life easier.

Is there a better way to answer this question? I would assume most grads would say they are “highly ambitious, interested, motivated”, etc. I’m looking for an answer that would make me stand out and not some generic sales pitch that every other candidate says.

Similar questions are “why are you the best fit for this position?”, “What makes you more qualified than this other candidate?”

i’ve gotten this question, and frankly was quite annoyed when I got it. it’s kind of a dbag question too, because they you like 2 facts about that person and you’re supposed to just know everything about them? BS

I’d never ask it personally, but you have to answer it out of the box beyond just school/achievements. they may say “why you vs a ivy league grad with the same gpa”. and if you didn’t have the ivy league degree, you’d have to give examples like how you had to fight for everything you earned, nothing was presumed of you bec you were not stamped with the name… etc

“If you can’t tell, then I should probably have a talk with your boss.”

Of course, that response is suicidal, unless he laughs.

Yea I thought this was only a question they asked in that first minute of a porno job interview scene. I would imagine you would have to be a pretty big idiot to ask it in an interview.

I you threw out bchads answer, put on your sunglasses and walked out, that would be by far, the most badass thing anyone has ever done.

Answer: “The other candidate, despite having a high GPA and top notch education, is a hopeless alcoholic who requires constant supervision to prevent him (or her) from stealin’ and harrassin’. I, on the other hand, do not harrass or steal and only drink alcohol to intoxication on weekends and holidays.”

“Brevity”

I’ve had someone asking this boarderline douchey baggey question before. I just said if you can show me their resumes I may be able to point out why.

My read on that question would be that the interviewer is trying to see if you’re the kind of person who will instantly rip into another candidate and be really negative.

To me, a good answer would be to keep it positive, talk about what you will bring to the role and maybe throw in something that you’re better at relative to the other guy so as to not totally cop out of the questions and to show that you’re able to articulate criticism of someone without coming across like a dick.

i’ve been asked this question before. it can come off as douchy but in my mind it’s a fair question. like gringo said, if they point out a classmate or someone you know as a fellow candidate, they probably want to see if you are going to be diplomatic or speak negatively.

like gringo said above, i would start by saying they’re all good candidates with their own strengths but my competitive advantage/strengths, (list them), would be most beneficial to the team in the short/long run because(demonstrate knowledge of the business).

well my handicap is 1.0
