BNN-Squeeze Play guess

Did anybody catch Miss. Genevieve Roch-Decter on BNN’s Squeezeplay last night April 7’09? i think she is like 22 but shows tremendous talent. I think Amanda Lang was feeling threatened. she is apparently only a research associate yet she was impressive. she is setting a very high bar for associates. such talent.

She is apparently a recent graduate of McMaster University (?) that works for her father’s or father-in-law’s investment firm. What is up with the Canadianness of this site, by the way?

Are you Canadian too, JTLD? Say it ain’t so!

(If you are indeed Canadian I’ll explain that quote to you.)

Don’t get me wrong, though; some of my best friends are Canadian.

she was impressive though. that is the bottom line. i mean, you can tell she is rough around the edges, but she was speaking like a pro. man, i feel inferior. how many of you guys in associate roles can do that? fyi, she hasn’t even passed Level 1 of the CFA. so for all of you guys that say…“what will CFA get me? get to her level first. CFA means nothing if you can do what she can”. you think she is single?

Sure, she sounds bright but what do you expect from someone in her position. She spends her day reading about all that. Most people in her position do not post on forums like this (lack of time?). I think you got too accustomed to the topics on this board from people with too much time on their hands (including myself).

how many research associates post on this forum? my last count was plenty. research associates are basically entry level positions from what i understand. i haven’t met too many associates, but the ones I did meet who work at BB are far from that. I mean, i feel i have a shot at being an associate, but up against her…i might just succumb on my knees. can other research associates please stand up??

i know a few associate wannabes who can talk like that. they spent all their spare time reading and listening everything Wall street to break in the business. Although this particular gal knows her stuff, I won’t be so sure she would hold that position if her daddy didn’t run the company.

being a reasearch associate is pretty easy, frank. i didnt see the program, but i doubt she is much better than any other research associate on the street. as an associate, you basically learn how to build EPS models and talk about what is going to drive EPS in the business. since that is all that the majority of people on the street look at, you can actually go pretty far on wall st without actually knowing how to *really* evaluate a business beyond looking at earnings and P/E ratios and maybe some kind of crappy DCF model that the analyst made up. i’ve had the experience multiple times where i get a pitch from my PM to look at a brand new company in an industry ive never researched before for a half a day or a day, and then call the associate or analyst who covers that company on the sell side only to realize that i actually already know more than they do about the company. it’s shocking. and then the calls are mostly not that useful since all they want to do is talk about earnings (which is pretty much the only thing i’m not interested in talking about on these calls). by and large, sell side associates and analyst are more like journalists than investors. they can talk a lot about a particular company, but what are they actually saying? it’s mostly just noise. also, post a link to pics and i’ll decide how impressive she is. or better yet, or a video link – i’ll watch it on mute.

i think i can be a research associate. I’m just impressed with how well she presented herself. most associates cannot do this imo. i have spoken to a few at the BB and from my impression, they weren’t on that level. but this lady doesn’t even have her MBA, CFA and she is already right up there. stop hating on her. i hope she puts out a calender.

I hate to be that guy, but she didn’t strike me as either particularly impressive or particularly attractive. She did a good job for being as young as she seems (and for a Canadian), however, and I guess she’s pretty attractive by the standards of the investment profession. On another note, I had never before heard of BNN or that show. Sometimes it seems like Canada is a whole different country.

I take it back; I agree she is pretty attractive. Especially for a Canadian.

Actually, I’d put her around a 7 - 7.5 on a GAAP-basis and like a 9 on a pro forma basis (adjusted for finance industry standards since most finance chicks are butt ugly).

I think those numbers seem about right.

Frank you’ve clearly got the hots for her. Does your boyfriend know about this? just kidding

She graduated with HS from McMaster, so I guess she must be pretty damn smart. People who get into that program usually also get into John Hopkins or an Ivy in the states. But her interview, she keeps pausing every 2 seconds, and nothing she said is anything new. Her points about Teck and Stimulus spending, sounds like she read the paper this morning.

Frank, my friend, what is special about her arguments? I wouldn’t judge her any differently than anyone else, meaning that there is nothing controversial or intellectual about what she is saying - it’ the same macroeconomic view everyone shares.
