Another data point… single, no kids, 20s, high cost of living city

1300 rent for a room with roommates in the city but easily 1600 for a studio/small 1br

250 student loans

300 food

500 going out/misc

so 2350 but you can bring it down to 1.2 to 1.5k/month if you live outside the city, stop going out, and live pretty frugally

Don’t forget health insurance, internet/cable, Bang Bros subscription, etc.

I find it hysterical that none of the Americans count in health insurance (but me) yet this is a financial board.

Ten stitches in the ER is going to cost you 5k if you don’t have health insurance.  An aspirin is like $20 in the hospital.  You would pass out if you ever saw an itemized hospital bill that wasn’t reduced due to insurance.

Blake and I agree on something here.  Why isn’t anyone including health insurance (I still pay for it and it raises my monthly living expense substantially… it’s the largest single expense after housing).

As for the cost of treatment:

My stepdaughter had 3 stitches in the hospital after an accident, plus an x-ray, coming home essentially fine (albeit shaken).  Final cost without insurance:  a little over $15,000.

We saw this bill because of wierdness with the insurance plans and state laws, etc..  Eventually insurance paid it, but while they were wrangling, the hospital tried to get us to pay and the numbers were pretty scary.

You want a quote?  Haven’t I written enough already???

I suspect a lot of the folks are youths who would forgo health insurance.  I went without it for a couple of years when I was in grad school and i was in my late 20’s.

You can fondle the cube, but it will not respond.

A high deductable plan in your 20s is like ~100 a month and that is with a major carrier like Blue Shield in a state like CA.  I saw all the prices and plans when I signed up.  There are no excuses.

How much is health insurance per month if not covered by your employer?  Does it depend on age, location, education, etc?

I am getting my medical and dental insurance back on July 1 through work. I’ve been uninsured for about a year due to lapses in school coverage and such.

I will pay about $65 a month for a high deductible BCBS plan. The nice thing is my employer contributes $650 per year to your HSA if you have a HD plan, so after taxes, you’re paying less for the insurance coverage then the company is contributing to your HSA.
