kindle if it’s only for reading ebooks (love that e-ink), but there’s no replacing the usefullness of an iPad for everything else, so I’ll take my ipad first. plus the schweser app is mad useful for studying ethics on the train to work.
Regarding the iPad and Kindle, I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of each for months now. I still don’t know which one to buy. I saw a person with a kindle on the subway, and the e-ink looks easier on the eyes. On the other hand, all it’s good for is reading books.

To solve readability issues, it seems like the only way to go is to have a separate e-reader for reading and a tablet for everything else. I’m about 8 months into researching this stuff, talk about commitment issues.

I have the nook — it was $150 a few years ago … I only wanted B&W on top - I don’t like color. It is color on part of the screen but not the reading part.
I prefer regular books, but bring this when on travel as I will read 5-10 books if on travel for a month.
I also prefer regular books, but the Kindle app for Iphone is pretty sweet:
- It is free
- Doesn’t take any extra physical space
- Books are cheaper
- You can get the books “right now” instead of waiting for the mail
It is especially good for travelling and reading in bed (no need for lights).
I haven’t seen that Kindle special ink, which supposedly is pretty nice, but having one less gadget to walk around with is good enough for me. And I have no idea what’s the point of the Ipad - it must be good somehow, cause people like it, but I can’t see the appeal.
I have an iPad and a Kindle. I would say they are not really direct competitors. Kindle is only for reading. Its plus points are that it’s relatively cheap, has at least two weeks of battery life (battery just never dies!) and is excellent for outdoor reading. It is ideal for travelling.
iPad is an all rounder and seriously addictive. You can check email, facebook and whatever else you spend/waste your time on. You’ll still need an actual computer for some stuff whether that is a destop or laptop but for just browsing the iPad is unbeatable.
If you can afford to spend a few hundred on what is essentially a toy for adults, get yourself an iPad. You won’t regret it.
If you like to read while you travel, get a Kindle.

It was a pretty good experience, but I thought the screen was relatively small to function as a textbook/magazine/newspaper replacement so I opted for an iPad 2. I was extremely impressed and found myself using it for like 5 hours the day I bought it. The Bloomberg and CNBC apps are great.
I bought a kindle, but now pretty much use an iPad for everything, because - while a kindle is better for most reading - it doesn’t handle email and RSS and other things as well.
I like regular books too, but when traveling it is awesome to be able to have dozens of books to choose from. I never really know what I’ll be in the mood to read when I actually do start reading, so the flexibility of kindle/iPad/whatnot is much better than lugging 20 books around in a backpack.
I have a lot of reference manuals on my iPad in kindle form too, which is really nice when coding away from my own library.

If you like charting there’s a pretty good pay app called iChartist Pro. Lots of customization available for the charts etc. That, bloomberg and cnbc are probably the only finance related apps I use on the ipad.
I have the iPad version of iChartist pro. It’s not perfect, but it was the best charting app I could find when I was looking. I’m still pretty happy with it.

I’m with chibwack. For reading, it’s hard to beat the Kindle. But with all the other stuff you can do on the iPad, iPad wins out.
If you are really looking for a reading-only device, Kindle is a good buy. Otherwise, do iPad.
