“Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) said it’s adding DNA tests of meat it sells in China after recalling donkey products from a local supplier that authorities said contained fox DNA.”
huh. I would have thought fox meat was more rare and valuable? or maybe it was just some local farmer that likes hunting and wanted to boost his production
Sometimes when dealing with third world suppliers its much cheaper and less carries less liability to ignore how things are done and just look at the quality of how things are done. Safety practices, hygenie, etc. You don’t want to know how many of your goods are produced.
I know of cases in industry where firms have rejected lower cost suppliers in India, for example, for safety and workforce violations. If they just stuck to quality inspections, they’d have a cheaper product and shareholders would be happier. Ignorance is bliss.
If Walmart inspected all of their suppliers, then they’d be accountible for abuses and would probably have to switch to more costly suppliers in a lot of areas. It’s much easier to just check the end product for safety reasons, and not to care if people are abused, children are illegally employed, safety and sanitary practices not maintained, etc.
