driving to new places before GPS sucked. If you got lost, you were in trouble.

Ahhh, scrambled porn.

And then almost having a meltdown when the Ticketmaster guy handed out randomly assigned wristbands and the person who showed up last got to go to the front of the line.

I forgot how angry I was when this hapepned to me. Until I read this, and now I’m angry again

I’d have to think about this, but other than the internet and cell phones, I think GPS has had the largest positive impact on my life in terms of new technology since I was a kid in the 80s. I’ve done a lot of road trips and it has saved me many times.

The fact that Google exists makes me 500 times mor knowledgeable than any human who existed before 1990. I can instantly verify or research any possible topic studied by humans. The Internet is basically an extension of human brains.

Good old encarta… I remember how my first computer had a 500 MB hard drive, Netscape, and the 56 k modem that made beeping sounds when it connected.

Yea and Google Navigator(GPS on steroids) saves me countless hours of traffic by redirecting me these random routes around the backup. It just saved me 1.5 hours this Monday.

How did you old folks communicate that you’d be late when meeting people? Telepathy?

Back in the day, webcrawler.com dominated the internet search engine game!

Yes, exactly - it’s too bad the art of telepathy is lost on the younger less metaphysically connected generation.

In fact, the only reason I even typed this response is for the younger crowd of the board, the older ones already knew what I was going to post!

Before cell phones, nobody was ever late. Also, everyone used to be able to do portfolio optimization in their head. Stupid technology thingamajigs are ruining the world.

I think this is an important point. The existence of Google may actually be the single most important development in the history of civilisation (unless you get all derivative on this and claim the internet, or computer or semi conductor or plastics or whatever). And I really don’t think I’m overstating that.

Written language by far is the most important. Perhaps derivative, but once we could write things down we could build on previous generations knowledge.

Why was writing first used? To keep shop inventory.

We old folks are never late.

Google was nowhere near the first search engine. People were searching the web on yahoo, alta vista and prior to that Archie long before Google was even formed. I don’t think the efficiency boost between msn or yahoo and google qualifies as even one of the great advancements in world history.

Even if you’re on-time, you’re late.
