Buy-siders: Can you trade in your personal portfolio?

I can direclty own real estate but I can’t invest in listed products that involve real estate. It’s dumb.

numi, I had/have a big problem with it. I think you can adhere to the rules and steer clear of the appearance of inappropriate trading without such draconian policies. If they made you liquidate your PA and you had to eat a tax bill because of it (I did), then that is even more bunk. It bugs me even more because we don’t trade public positions at my fund.

And as far as focusing on your PA more than your work, well I’m guessing you wouldn’t have gotten the job in the first place if you were so easily distracted.

Such is life as low man in the totem.

This is an old thread but relevant to me. What’s everyone’s thoughts on a buyside long only shop (equities) which requires its staff to sell all personal stock holdings before joining. The only investment which is OK are mutual funds. Seems very limiting to one’s wealth accumulation. I’ve invested since college and have 10+ years of work experience under my belt.
