Regarding the original question, why not just use Flash Fill (if you’re using a later version of excel)? Type a few tickers,hit a button, then it’s done. There’s no need for a formula. Sounds like my first post is a winner…

You should never merge cells. There is a formatting option that allows the cells to appear merged without actually merging them. This is almost always a better option. It screws up formulas and things otherwise
