Learning French

^^

Ummm…it might be a slightly harder than that to clean up in MTL, considering the fact that you already have a good half of the city that speaks French, with every accent imaginable.

What are your thoughts on the Dothraki language spoken in the plains of Essos? I heard many girls are into this, as well as being offered the raw heart of a horse to guarantee a strong male child.

I was forced to learn French last year during 1st sem of my Pg.This language has little similarity with English.

However now i have fully forgotten what ever i had learned in French language.Currently i only remember few words like merci, bonjouer etc etc…

Someone speaking it from out of town is different than someone speaking from in town. An outsider is always more intriguing.

Anyone learn to speak Russian?

I can’t speak Russian, but when I was on a trip to Moscow with a co-worker he was amazed that I could read most of the signs along the highways and streets. I explained that the Cyrillic alphabet stems from the Greek alphabet, and I can read Greek, so most of it was easy. And the few letters that are different were pretty easy to decipher when we passed places such as McDonald’s ("Oh, so that’s a “d”!).

the P/R and H/X confuse ppl

“out of town” in MTL doesn’t mean much.

Walk on any busy street in MTL on a saturday afternoon and you’ll likely hear several types of French accents within the first hour: Québécois, Parisian and North African being the three most likely.

Not those who know Greek.

Any book on basic French grammar should do.

Youtube and Skype should be your main tools in learning a new language (or talking to native speakers if there are any in your area.)

Use Youtube to learn how to pronounce words and Skype to practice conversing with others in French.

^Thanks blackomen, very helpful

You should learn with Katy Perry.

I used the Michael Thomas method when learning Russian and I found it to be one of the better ways to do it. I was pretty impressed.

I’ve since forgotten most of my Russian, and never really spoke it very well, but I felt that I made the fastest progress with remarkably little effort listening to the Michael Thomas method on my iPod/iPhone in the subway.

I probably would have done even better if I hadn’t been too self conscious to practice speaking things out loud (as you are supposed to) while in the middle of the subway car, surrounded by hundreds of sardine-packed people.

They have a reasonably well thought-out website that gives you a sample.

Why not take a class? If you are in NYC, here is a place you can do it.

They also have tons of events/movies to practice conversational and listening skills…

In my experience, you need a combination of official grammar classes with other interacting activities to learn a language well.

Never heard of this Michael Thomas method. i’ve been battling with Mandarin for the past year and can’t say i’m any better than “Basic”. Will check this out.

Go spend a few months living in France. Not Paris. Nothing like immersion.

Best way to learn a foreign language is to sleep with someone who speaks the language you want to learn.

Why? Sometimes less talking is good : )
