Tier 1 Canadian MBA's?

So my coworker and I were just talking about this and couldn’t really reach a consensus. What would you say are the best MBA programs in Canada? We agreed that Ivey and Queens were up there, and he wants to include UBC but I’m a little hesitant about that one. Thoughts?

We’re talking from an high finance perspective of course.

So, serious question - do Canadian people cross shop US programs in addition to Canadian programs? If not, is it a matter of cost or visa/admissions? I figure that distance is not really an issue. If there is cross shopping, how do Canadian people generally view Canadian programs compared to US programs?

Tier 1 Canadian MBA’s are people that went to Tier 1 USA schools

Yeah we do for sure, I know quite a few people that have done it. But tuition can come at a significant premium as international students, plus there’s the whole hassle of visa issues and whatever. Beyond that I don’t really see what would stop us. I mean…unless you can’t get over the whole patriotic support your own country’s institutions thing. On the other hand, from what I’ve heard we have some very good programs, some have went as far as to say on par with ivey leagues depending on the specialization. How much of that is just canadian’s blowing smoke up my ass, I couldn’t say. I have a hard time seeing a canadian bank i.e. RBC turning you away because you went to a canadian school though.

Canada doesn’t come out on the FT top MBA list until University of Toronto : Rotman , #44 http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-rankings-2012/

McGill!

Is Mcgill’s bcomm program considered strong? I know the school is known for medicine and law.

I’d add Rotman and McGill to your list of Ivey and Queen’s as top tier in Canada (not necessarily top tier in NA or internationally). As for UBC, I don’t know - I just don’t think it has the same reputation nationally that the other 4 do. Same goes for Schulich - it is recruited heavily by banks in CAN and seems to always rank in the top 100 internationally, but simply based on admission criteria and acceptance rates I wouldn’t put it in the same league as the others.

Also, it depends on the type of MBA, as there are usually options for a joint program with another school (ie Queen’s offers a joint eMBA with Cornell, Schulich with Kellogg, etc) which would add more of an international component, could increase reputation, etc.

Re McGill’s BComm, I’ve always heard great things. I think it is overlooked by a lot of Ontario students due to its location (as well as the presence of strong undergrad programs in the province like Western, Queen’s, U of T). That said, I think a lot of people could be missing out as Montreal really is a great city.
