Future of Detroit

What else could go wrong with this place? 29% unemployment in July Lions suck Megatron is injury prone Tigers lost to the Twins in a tiebreaker GM bankrupt Chrysler bankrupt Ford spends its remaining liquidity on annoying commercials The silverdome just sold for $583,000, under 1% of the cost of building Highest murder rate Highest abandonment rate Highest building vacancy rate What has Motown given us recently? Nick Cannon? Is there anyway this city can become as prominent as it once was early in the century? There have been a few high-level predictions that it will become the Las Vegas of the North, as the only thing that has taken flight recently has been its casinos.

You forgot a few: <1m people living in Detro Metro now No major grocery chains in Detrot Metro

Thank you UAW.

Needs Robocop.

my friend’s sister bought 3-bedroom house (swimming pool etc) in 50K in Detroit’s subarb. BTW, Eminem is from there

My bet is the U.S. will sell Detroit to Canada to pay the bills

Given the current excahnge rate with might get a few Royal Mountees, Aliman and some Hockey Sticks. Aliman being the most valuable of the bunch.

Haha trust me Detroit will not become the Las Vegas of the North. They have casinos all over the midwest, and Cleveland & Columbus just voted to build casions as well. At least the mayor is not in jail anymore.

Let’s not forget that the Red Wings and their fans are a bunch of classless clowns.

Lots of unused industrial capacity, cheap housing and labor. . . It could become the center for a revitalized manufacturing center given the cheap dollar. That is my hope.

^what’s the export route? could be something to that thesis. I’m seeing it in the LA basin.

If it were just about cheap labor Sub Saharan Africa would be the world’s work shop. Germany is either the second or first largest global exporter. We need to improve quality, we can’t compete on price alone. The gov thought we could export services across the world! We still run a trade deficit with Japan, even as the yen went from 300 per USD in the early 70s to where it is now.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Detriot turned into a ghost town eventually. Apparently there are a number of cities, albeit MUCH smaller, that have been abandoned. Saw this on “Life After People” on the history channel. Legit small cities going completely under and being abandoned. So my guess is that Detriot becomes a museum.

How much fun would it be to go all “I am Legend” on Detroit and just RIP the city apart in a Mustang…or Corvette, would that be sac relig?

The leadership in Detroit (if any exists) needs to pick some up and coming, non-auto related industry to focus on, institute a program to train and attract home grown intellectual talent (at U of M and Mich. State or whatever), leverage the skilled manual labor force from the dying auto companies, ban any former auto execs from working in said industry, and outlaw unions. If they could do all that, and they picked the right industry, the town would revitalize. Look at Pittsburgh’s recovery from the decline of the steel industry into a respectable tech hub, through government support and a good tech program at Carnegie Mellon. It’s not Silicon Valley, but it’s decent and has helped the city recover. I don’t know what they could make in Detroit specifically, maybe some sort of green-tech manufacturing or whatever. I doubt it’s going to happen but it would be possible with the right ideas, some strong leadership and a decent amount of time.
