Resume Critique

Sorry razume converted my resume all weird. Thanks in advance. http://www.razume.com/documents/13742

Here are my quick thoughts based on a couple minutes of observation – (1) Scratch the objective section (2) Bullets are too long and wordy; need to truncate to about 2/3 length and cut extraneous words; too many. (3) What were you doing between end of 2007 and early 2008? (4) Education section - OK but not too impressive…look too much like a student/academic (5) Wordiness or lack of clarity will cause you problems again; similar to point #2. One specific example is the second bullet from the top - what does this mean? You “interfaced” with someone? So whose investment ideas were they, yours or theirs? And when you provide reports on “investor sentiment,” where do your own thoughts come into play? What *exactly* do you actually do besides reporting on other people’s work? These are all questions that pop into the reader’s mind when they see this. (6) You have two bullets in the 2008-2009 job that start with “delivered.” Need to be more creative here. (7 and most importantly) Your analytical and client-relationship skills come across in your resume, but there is some duplication in each paragraph. Try to highlight different skills you may have gained at different jobs. When I read your resume, I see someone who is effective at getting stuff done, but may not necessarily have the capability to lead, manage, or bring creative ideas to the table. Show me some qualities that make me think you can excel at the job and have some long-term potential, as opposed to just being an analyst/associate for life. Hope this helps – it’s an OK start but there is still significant room for improvement as outlined above. Should be able to improve as long as you’re willing to invest the time and effort.

Thanks numi. Very helpful. My position has posed some challenges for resume bullet points. For example, its really difficult to quantify the core of my responsibilities and achievements at work that anyone outside of this business is going to understand. Ex/ “Identified 15 activist hedge funds before the 13F information.” For 4) What would you recommend that I change? For 6) This has always been somewhat of a scar on my resume. I graduated and had a nice position lined up, but snapped my collar bone in half 1 week after graduation. I had to get surgery and this basically put me out for nearly 4months. (Really miserable experience). I had to start the job search process all over again. I didn’t just sit idle during my injury (studied for GMAT and helped my father manage assets in one of his LLCs), but I don’t see how I can put that on a resume…

Blackbelt, who did you work for in Tampa if you don’t mnd telling me? I am in the Tampa Bay area now and work for a large brokerage firm based here.

Is this large brokerage firm near 275 and the water?

Sure is.

Seriously numi, all the AF regulars are very aware of your services and those who are interested in them certainly will contact you. At some point you should slow down that sales pitch.

I would pay numi if i had an impressive resume but no amount of rewording can make up for my resume. Resume doesn’t look half bad but i agree its too wordy.

I’m surprised numi hasn’t gotten dinged yet for pedaling his business all over AF, or that no one’s offered to undercut his price. I’ve edited a lot of my friends and colleagues resumes for free over the years; the fair price for this type of service is not much greater than 0.

I think your resume is stronger than you realize. However, part of the challenge for any resume would be to (1) explain what you accomplished in a way that can be appreciated by your general audience, and (2) convey that you did something that made an impact without disclosing anything confidential. > For 4) What would you recommend that I change? This one’s easy – talk about what you did outside the classroom that shows you have the other qualities that enable you to succeed in a high-pressure team-oriented environment. It’s not all about studying hard, getting good grades, etc. > For 6) This has always been somewhat of a scar on > my resume. Sorry to hear that – then it’s ok, just let the employment gap be what it is and just explain when asked in an interview. This is easily understood and people won’t ding you without asking you to discuss it first. Don’t worry about this.

So you want to change after 3 months of joining your current company, very bold! - Your Manager

Your thought that resume editing services are not valued at “much greater than zero” sounds like your own speculation. Maybe that’s the value of the service that you provide; however, I’ve received dozens of testimonials that state the contrary. Anyone could undercut my price if they wanted to, though frankly it doesn’t leave much room for undercutting. Plus, I think it’s obvious that while anyone can make an attempt to do something, a big part of any value proposition is reliability, timeliness and quality. It often takes substantial time to re-work a major business document. The cost of document editing or mock interviewing is often less than 0.25% of what a person could be making at the job they’re trying to get, so it’s not quite easy to understand the value proposition. Maybe you don’t need help with your documents, but others aren’t so lucky and I don’t think it’s fair to try to stifle these individuals from looking for the support they need. Given how many requests I’ve gotten to do resume editing/mock interviewing these days, I can only conclude three things: (1) the job market seems to be picking up, and (2) people are serious about giving their best effort to attain the positions they want, and (3) people know that I’m reliably good at what I do, and that I will work hand-in-hand with people to be the best they can be. And yes, I do plan to make less mention of my services because word of mouth seems to be quite sufficient. Plus, I’ve already helped several people get to final rounds or secure offers already even though we’re only a month into the new year. These people have already achieved their career objectives and probably won’t be needing my help anymore.

Or there’s a second alternative; numi could pay Chad to put a banner instead of those annoying Élan Guides and its sh!tty “passéverance” program. … “passéverance” my @ss.

Can we get a banner with Numi’s face instead of all the crap they have up there now?

Interesting idea, CzarHC…could help boost readership from female user base Also, has anyone here used “Quartic Training”? Curious as to what this is, not to mention how something “quartic” really relates to the CFA curriculum.

You mean you’ll get all 5 AF females?

Not sure why some members feel the need to give you crap for helping out others.

^for the record, Numi’s advice on this board has been some of the best I’ve seen anywhere free or otherwise

CzarHC and CFABLACKBELT, thanks for your kind words. CFABLACKBELT, to your point about small minority “giving me crap,” I think that’s just normal for certain people to do when they have too much free time. Some people like to challenge my opinions, and when I’m too busy I just ignore them. Otherwise, I actually welcome the discussion every time – it only helps me to reinforce my conviction in my track record along with my desire to help others achieve their career goals. I figure that most of us are on this forum to learn from others and advance our careers, so it’s quite easy for me to tune out all the “noise” when I see legitimate questions like yours. In any case, I appreciate your feedback and wish you the best with your job application process - let us know if you have any follow-up questions.
