CFA Society vs. CFA Institute

Hello,

I’m looking to join the CFA Society/Institute and was wondering what is the difference. My understanding is that I can use the CFA designation if I am in the institute (pay the $275 dues). Do I also need to join the CFA Society? What benefits are there to being in a society?

The local societies often hold events which you can attend as a member, and your membership will often get you a discount.
