Is the exam divided up by topic area? or through each 120 Q section are they in random order.

Cannot seem to find this anywhere

Yes it is.

  • Questions 1 – 18 are on Ethics.
  • Questions 19 – 32 are on Quantitative Methods.
  • Questions 33 – 44 are on Economics.
  • Questions 45 – 68 are on Financial Reporting and Analysis.
  • Questions 69 – 77 are on Corporate Finance.
  • Questions 78 – 89 are on Equity.
  • Questions 90 – 101 are on Fixed Income.
  • Questions 102 – 107 are on Derivatives.
  • Questions 108 – 112 are on Alternative Investments.
  • Questions 113 – 120 are on Portfolio Management.

The questions are divided into sections. When I took the exam in Dec. 2016, the questions were grouped. I think the ordering might have been different, but the questions were definitely grouped by topic.

On Level I, the CFAI has specified exact weights for each of the topics, you can be sure about the distribution of questions by topic.
