Just wondering, which is which? RGS and GICS define sector as the broadest category while ICB uses industry. Is this something that needs to be discerned on a case by case basis and based on context or is one definition preferred to the other?
In all of the lists I’ve seen, sectors are broader than industries.
For example, on one list that I use when writing practice questions, the consumer staples sector includes these industries:
- Beverages
- Food & Staples Retailing
- Food Products
- Household Products
- Personal Products
- Tobacco
