Recruiter bashing

I was talking to a recruiter who posted a job opening in the Middle East. This position asked for Asian experience, which I had. She could see my phone number which is from the U.S. I mentioned to her about my Middle East experience. Then her reponse was ‘BUT THE MIDDLE EAST IS NOT IN ASIA’. By the way she is from Europe.

In your first paragraph you say you have Asian experience. In your second you say you mentioned your Middle East (not Asian) experience (which was not what the posting asked for, though the job location was in the Middle East). Unless I’m missing something I think I’m with the recruiter on this one.

The position asked for Asian experience in general. I believe Middle East in Asia.

The point was her comment ‘middle east is not in Asia’.

When I think Middle East I don’t think of Asia. Just my opinion.

In all my life I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone suggest that the Middle East IS in Asia. The Economist doesn’t seem to think it is, for example. The Wikipedia entry for “Middle East” starts “The Middle East (or, formerly more common, the Near East[1]) is a region that spans southwestern Asia, southeastern Europe, and northeastern Africa.”, which I believe is accurate.

Just because you don’t think of it doesn’t mean its not true. I.e. she shouldn’t have gotten angry at somebody because she has inferior geography knowledge. In any case recruiters aren’t usually very smart, they are usually more people people but not thinking people. They aren’t quite NY Real Estate agents (scum of the earth) but they are usually scum.

To me that page makes it look like the Middle East is next to Asia, not in Asia. I would also say that the Middle East extends from Iran and Bahrain West to Israel and Jordan and does not include the -stans, so I think the “Middle East” label in that map is a little misplaced. You are entitled to your opinion of course; I’m just think the vast majority of people in the world disagree with you.

It may also be that I am wrong according to some technical geographical definition of the continents (though not according to common usage). You can be sure going forward, however, that if a job description calls for experience in “Asia” that they don’t have in mind Bahrain, Iran or points West.

They asked for experience in Asia, so I figured my time working in Russia should qualify…

this thread is great. i’m with captain crunch- who the heck thinks mideast is in asia ? answer:no one but tom80612345782101

EMEA is a commonly used term to describe a region It means Europe, Middle East, Asia Nuff said

In my experience “EMEA” stands for “Europe, the Middle East and Africa”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe,_the_Middle_East_and_Africa And it’s “Windjammer”; “Captain Windjammer”, not “crunch”.

fuck, i messed that up, it is indeed africa APAC is for the asian regions…

L3BeatIt and Captain WindJammer, you guys might be correct and these links might be wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_countries_and_territories http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.travelblog.org/pix/maps/asia.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/&h=454&w=500&sz=55&tbnid=qxkjHkOyjJhGLM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dasia&usg=__meFaONwm0J8GONHpwT51sITDu0I=&ei=c6ZeSuK6B5v8tgeJ05ngAw&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/_derived/index.htm_txt_map-of-asia.gif&imgrefurl=http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/&h=364&w=480&sz=9&tbnid=k1cYgteTgSDcZM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=129&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcountries%2Bin%2Basia&usg=__Mpc5rkNvqKbwGvhG4yPx4u_vQ4w=&ei=WKVeSp-ZC4Sktgfc9KzgAw&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=4&ct=image http://www.mapsofworld.com/asia/ http://geography.about.com/library/maps/blrasia.htm http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/me.htm http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Regions/Asia/Countries/ http://www.timberhunt.com/timber_trade/asia.html http://www.infoplease.com/atlas/asia.html

Otherwise what is the point in being myself… I could very well be like that recruiter.

Maybe you should print out those sites and carry them around with you to prove your obscure technical point that’s completely out of line with modern usage to anyone who disagrees with you. To return to the original question, as between the recruiter working to fill a job that required experience in “Asia” and the candidate claiming that his experience in the Middle East should qualify, I think it’s a slam dunk for the recruiter. Unless maybe the job was “Junior Pedantic Geographer” or the like.

the full name of Middle East in Diplomatic terminology is Middle east asia… the only country in the middle east which may not want to be called a part of Mid east asia is Turkey and may be Israel. All other countries in diplomatic parlance which are called part of mid east are in Asia.
