what does relevant experience mean?

Guys, I am not directly in investment industry. I worked as project manager and business consultant. Both jobs use a lot of capital budgeting, business modelling and analysis of balance sheet etc. I don’t know if these can be regarded as related experience. And if I apply based on this and rejected, do I get my application fee back …? Thanks

Anyone help me with this question please? or there were good answers to this previously? many thanks.

I’m in pretty much the exact same boat… still don’t have an answer.

50% of your time in your position must involve making an investment decision in some way or form. i think the above would be considered business planning, not business investment, so would not qualify. i’m sure people have fooled them into accepting most any experience though.

The CFA website states that 50 percent of your time has to be spent in ***qualifying activities***. These qualifying activities include: Directly involved in the investment decision-making process or Engaged in responsibilities and/or producing a work product that informs or adds value to that process So you don’t really need to be making the investment decision as long as you are performing some task that add value to the investment decision making process. I personally will be applying for the charter next week and have NEVER made a investment decision in a professional setting. I have been working on the technology side developing and enhancing fixed income trading platforms at banks and pension funds. I would consider my activities to add value to the investment decison making process. I also hope that the CFA institute shares my view on this

I’m also in a similar situation. If you would like to bounce work experience submission ideas, drop me a line at cfafpa@yahoo.ca

while, you guys are in the investment industry anyway, so I guess it is more convincing. But being in the corporate and consulting sectors, I am not sure about myself. I do have some friends working in consulting before and applying for the charter using that experience. Guess I would have to move inside first and ASAP?

clueless555 / hedwig /cfa87, I am in the same boat… working on FI trading system. My email is sbbi98 at yahoo let us bounce ideas…

Anybody got an idea with my situation? My position isn’t “Directly involved in the investment decision-making process” or “engaged in responsibilities and/or producing a work product that informs or adds value to that process.” However; I work as a banking regulator and I spend about 40-50% of my time as a capital market specialist. The bank I regulate has over $50 billion in assets and I work directly with their capital position, liquidity position and planning, and their interest rate risk. Thanks, in advance, for any insight

If you work on capital budgeting, then you directly add to the investment process…try to relate this to all the LOS in L1 and L2

Jscott, thanks for your explanation. when I nail level 3 next year, I will give it a go. and see if the investment industry is back on track by then …

Has anyone successfully used back office expereince to get the charter?

Anyone?

bump

I also need help on this topic! Anyone in the corporate/commercial banking field and would like to work together on this? Thanks.

back office work will not count and please tell me you guys didn’t pass all three levels and not know you needed this work experience?

Back office could count. For example, if you build technology used on a trading desk. that is certainly an activity that informs and adds value to the investment process…

Should you always emphasize what you do adds value to the investment decision making process? For example: “I did blah blah…… which adds value to the investment decision making process?”
