"Determine" v "Calculate"

When a questions says “Determine” but it is obvious that a calculation is required, what do you do? Example: Determine based on Exhibit 1 and Cobb-Douglas. Exhibit 1 = all numbers Thanks

Depends on question. Need more details but with Cobb Douglas I’d say it’s needed.

It may say something like determine whether growth will increase or decrease. Hard to say the answer without calculating the sustainable growth rate.

However, on a couple historical papers they ask to determine the effect of, for example, a new regulation requiring more stringent pollution controls. Then no calculation is needed. Just know it will decrease total factor productivity and why.
