Derivative financial liabilities ?

What are Derivative financial liabilities and why are they classed as current liabilities?

I’m assuming that when an obligation on derivative contracts become due within a 12 month period then that is classed as a liability to be paid at some stage (within 12 months).

None of the financial statements I’ve looked at say that it’s non-current so is it automatically classed as current because it is a derivative financial liability?
