56 year old factory worker walks 21 miles every day to get to work. He makes barely more than $10 an hour so he can’t afford a car. In total, he walks 6 hours a day. He wakes up at 6 am, leaves his place at 8 am, takes the bus at 8:30 am which drops him at 9:30 am at the closest bus stop to his job. He then walks 3 hours to get to work. He works until 10 pm and gets back home at 4 am. The dude sleeps 2 hours a day.
They don’t have buses there? I didn’t read the article. That’s incredible. You would think maybe there would be a way to live closer too. I get it, he’s impoverished and doing everything he can to make it work, I’m just a little skeptical there is not a better solution than walking six hours a day.
I would have stopped in at least one place every day on my walk to work, introduced myself and asked them if they were hiring. After that, I would spend the walk time to get a second job near by and buy a car and whatever I needed.
i don’t buy the story… Especially 2 hrs of sleep a night.
Seems like a case of stubborness more thatn anything. Like the people who refused to leave New Orleans after they were warned about hurricane Katrina. Anyway, oh well. At least the guy makes an effort to hold a job. Seriously though, what is it with black people who refuse to move?
That’s not exactly how it worked. People are warned to leave for every hurricane and Katrina just caused some unforeseeable problems with infrastructure failing, which they were not warned about because no one expected it to be a problem. But that is not the common narrative for the national audience. It is interesting how it seems all these mayors and governors take weather extremely seriously now – like with the snow in NYC recently. But I digress lol
even better… not only did the goFund me page exceed $300k, it doesn’t have to be used to buy a car since a dealership is giving him a brand new, fully loaded taurus.
