Republicans really dodged a bullett. Imagine the chaos if Jeb Bush was elected, good thing they elected a reality TV star with a string of bankruptcies to his credit to “shake things up.”
Or imagine the chaos if democrats had nominated someone who could have beaten a reality TV star.
In theory, Democrats should become more engaged in politics and achieve a better result in the next election. With his serial ineffectiveness, Trump is handing over this benefit without many adverse policy effects from the Democratic point of view.
However, the truth is that the Democrats are botching their reelection chances as much as Trump is not succeeding at policymaking. This should have been an opportunity for policy innovation and to refocus on issues that affect areas of the country where Hillary lost. Instead, Democrats are doubling down on Russia and Trump’s personal controversies, while allowing a militant left wing to proliferate. If this approach failed last time, it will likely fail again.
Instead of finding the next Obama (which, in a country of 300 million people, should be possible), the Democrats are falling back onto stagnated, divisive leaders like Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. Even worse, they are promoting politicians like Elizabeth Warren, whose views have no place in middle path politics. They are replicating the mistakes of the Republican party, which led to Trump’s candidacy in the first place.
