How do you buy a mattress?

Serious question. I walked into some mattress stores and was pretty sure the sales person… had a strong information advantage that they were trying to exploit. It is hard to buy online without trying. So what is the best way to find the best mattress, shop for a good price, etc…

I’ve not been able to find anything to substitute for just trying a ton of mattresses. Mrs. higgmond and I aren’t shy about laying there for 10 minutes at a time, trying with different pillows, jumping into the bed to see how much movement transfers, etc.

I always go to the store and try each one out. And I never go to Sleepy’s because the sales guys there always try to rip you off and get super aggressive with their sales tactics. I love direct to consumer boutiques with great reviews and physical location.

I currently have a Serta that has held up pretty well. Its a pillowtop.

But, last year I bought a Casper for my parent’s house guest room and I was pretty impressed. To be honest, I didn’t feel like going into the mattress store, so was just like f-it and ordered it.

I think I might buy a Casper next time I get a new one for myself. It kind of feels like a tempurpedic matress, but pretty firm. I really need to be firm for my back. I haven’t tried it out a lot, but maybe 4-5 nights… If you want to try it, they let you try it for 100 days free. It comes real quick in a rectangle cube type box.

Is there a way to try these Casper mattresses or use another, showroom mattress brand as a proxy? My wife likes these because of the cartoon advertisement…

go to costco imo. if you want a guaranteed premium at value https://www.costco.com/mattresses.html?&sortBy=BestMatch

bestsellers in amazon if you want quality. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Home-Kitchen-Mattresses/zgbs/home-garden/3732981/ref=zg_bs_nav_hg_5_3732971

also i hear tempurpedics are the best, but i do not have 1. https://www.tempurpedic.com/shop-mattresses/

I need a new one, i will be going to ikea and eating swedish meatballs then laying on them and buying whatever one i like.

Tempurpedics are very comfy but apparently are an absolute mess for your sex life

^ The quality of IKEA’s mattresses has dropped off significantly in the last couple of years IMO.

The mattress I got from Ikea is pretty bad. Hence, it requires replacing.

I think Casper has a showroom or at least a partnership with some furniture companies that stock their mattresses and allow you to try them out in store. I believe I saw that at West Elm…

I bought mine in MACYS about 8 years ago. The sales people aren’t too pushy and I am happy with the quality. The only thing is you need to decide yourself on the firmness and apparently I picked one that’s too firm for my weight…

I bought a king size memory foam mattress from Walmart about 6 years ago. Shipped to front door compressed in a medium size box. Very comfortable, highly reviewed. I think less than $600 with frame and sheet set? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Contura-III-12-Medium-Firm-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/14295532

Amazon has a brand called Zinus that we purchased for a guest room. Same thing, memory foam. Very comfortable as well, queen size under $200.

So I have heard, Ill see what they have and if its complete junk go elsewhere. Not looking for top of the line mattress as im likely to only need it for a few years between moving around every year or two they get pretty beat up anyway.

Mrs. SportBiker insisted on a new mattress when we moved. We looked everywhere mattresses are sold with in about 20 miles (big city, lots of stores). She got tired of shopping and ordered one off Amazon. Joke’s on her, it’s firm as hell and I love it. She doesn’t.

You need a new mattress. After 8 years your bed weighs about twice as much as it did when you bought it. Why? Mainly your dead skin, dead dust mites, and cat dander.

Funny how kitties have little cat dandruffs. It’s hard to see, and mostly is only visible on dark cats.

But then I need to choose one…

I had the same mattress from 8th grade until about a year after I got married. Now that I think about it, it did seem pretty heavy for a full size.
