For the second day in a row, North and South Korea continued their major diplomatic breakthrough by chatting on the phone.
North Korea initiated a phone call with its neighbor today (Jan. 4) at around 9:30am local time to check whether the line was working, according to (link in Korean) a South Korean official with the country’s unification ministry. When the South asked the other side whether they had any updates, the North Korean side said “no,” but that if there were they would contact the South again, and then hung up. . .
Up until then, South Korea said it had been calling the North twice daily since February 2016, when Seoul shut down operations at the jointly operated Kaesong Industrial Complex. Until yesterday, no one had ever picked up.
According to pundits, North Korea’s goal in taking these diplomatic steps with South Korea is to motivate South Korea to open up relations with North Korea, in defiance to the US’s hard line stance. This is supposed to weaken the relationship between South Korea and the US and decrease US influence in the region.
Or maybe Trump has indeed masterfully orchestrated these steps toward reconciliation. I would not be surprised, as this would be only a minor achievement by the greatest leader of the 21st century. I don’t even need to wait for the rest of the century, he is so great.
it’s key to understand that he is not the leader of #MEGA, he is the face and communicator. The center of gravity of leadership of this movement is military intelligence. Trump is along for the ride and basically following orders. He is a flawed individual but has the correct combination of: celebrity charisma, outsider status, heart in the right place, intelligence, and courage. There have been about a dozen attempts on his life already.
He grew into this role as he was brought up to speed during the campaign. Again, he is not coming up with these strategies. They have been planned for decades and he is being shown how to execute them.

After watching the launch the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, who had spent the previous day visiting a catfish farm, announced: “We have finally realised the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, the cause of building a rocket power.”
Mr Kim eschewed the extravagantly bellicose rhetoric he normally indulges in after a successful missile launch. His “solemn declaration” emphasised that North Korea would be a “responsible nuclear power” that “would not pose any threat to any country and region” as long as the interests of North Korea “are not infringed upon”. It sounded like a plea for North Korea to be respected as a nuclear state, not vilified as a pariah…
Nobody really believes that there is a diplomatic path that will lead Mr Kim to give up his nuclear weapons. But diplomacy may yet play a role in crisis management and thus lessen the risks of a disastrous miscalculation. That may be what Mr Kim is now angling for.
