2019 Acura RDX: First nice Acura in a while?

What happened to these guys? Acura used to be a lot of peoples’ favorite brand. However, they’ve spent the last few years releasing a series of mediocre products.

Anyway, this new RDX looks quite promising. We can finally see the design direction they were pursuing with the new grill, which looks just ugly on the MDX and TLX. The new car has the engine from the Civic Type R, and it will probably make around 285hp/285lbft, which is great. It also has a modern interior for once, even if the quality (from pictures) doesn’t seem comparable to Audi or even VW.

If you’ve driven the current CR-V, you can tell that it has a really great platform that feels absolutely solid. It will respond very well to a sportier suspension and more power. I hope Acura takes advantage of this. They put the drive mode selector right in the middle of the dashboard; hopefully the car will be dynamically competent. Also, I don’t have an issue with button shifters specifically, but this unit is so high up that it looks like a pain to reach for. That touchpad that displaced it better be good.

In terms of competition, BMW X1 starts at $34k, and RDX is probably going to be decently equipped at that price. So, Acura might have a new bestseller on their hands…
