$1.5 Billion Dollar Powerball Lotto

I think that would leave each winner with about $175 million after taxes, assuming lump sum. I might have to scale back the vacation home purchases a bit and buying a professional sports team is probably off the table, but I think I can still make that work.

read my mind. Although OC and not SF. OC will be my primary residence and the house will be huge.

Mrs. Higgmond loves SF for some reason.

ahhh Mrs. infinity loves OC.

stopped by a gas station a couple hours ago. they already sold $4k worth of tickets just today.

Some guy on the street was yelling that he had tonight’s winning ticket, and he’d sell it for just $30.

Well I guess I have to go back to work tomorrow.

Sorry, S2k, no pony for you.

Anyone see that video about the group of restaurant workers who thought they won the 900m powerball? They went nuts for 20 min then realized they didn’t win lol

Looks like as of now only 1 winning ticket, so buying every combo would have potentially worked (assuming it was split 2 ways).

I knew of a kid in Boston who about 10 years ago would play some of the smaller state lotteries and developed a program to predict the winning numbers. It had something to do with right before the prizes rolled over, he would run his program and then him and a few friends would show up at convenince stores each with $15k and fill out lottery tickets for hours. He was not pulling in millions, but he hit almost every single time, and did very well for himself. Boston Globe ran an article about it a few years back. Nothing he did was illegal, but the state came to him to learn what he was doing so they could correct future lotteries to not be as predictable. Now, not everyone has the bank roll to throw $50k on each lottery, nor the time to fill out everything, but he was in college and did have the time.

In all reality, the lottery is another form of tax. Sure it is fine to occasionally throw a few dollars at it, but at the end of the day, it is an additional tax on the poors who blindly throw a significant percentage of their income for the massive long shot of finally hitting it. Nothing worse than being at a gas station and seeing some idiot who hits for $500 acting like they are a millionaire when you know they spent $1000 before winning $500.

Would have worked? Spent $584 million to collect half of what after taxes? Not really relevant. Still a negative expected return.

Powerball News even made it into Reuters Headlines: winning tickets also sold in Florida and Tennessee…

HA I totally called 3 winning tickets

Hold your horses, itera! It´s just talk about three states to have sold winning tickets, not about the number of winners at all… wink

Just called Lürssen to cancel the SS Higgmond.

man i drool looking at Lürssen yachts. imagine just taking those 200 footers from OC to hawaii. stop in the middle of the pacific and go for a swim then a nice steak dinner looking at the endless horizon with me and my mrs. infinity. ahh back to reality. well the sun is up! market is green

Mts. infinity would definitely have to put out in that scenario…because of the implication.

Lürssen seems to have a great reputation. The docks are appr. 20 kilometers from here, for you US guys 12.5 miles. Always interesting to see these amazing yachts on our small river…

i ran the calcs and stats.

so FV = 1.5b

30 year, 3% inflation, PV =617m

taxed at 40%

PV= 370m+ today

price of powerball is 2 bucks, ~300m combos. that’s $600m cost today.

so net net you are losing $230m even if you are a sole winner. you are even a bigger loser if you have to split pot.

but theoretically, if the pot grows large enough, and the odds of winning remain the same. you could have a positive payoff in the lotto.

i never bet on the lotto, but if there ever was a positive payoff. id consider buying a ticket. haha

haha nice
