Beethoven had the advantage of being born later than Mozart, and not dying at 35. His music is “better” than Mozart’s to the extent that his era progressed into the early romantic period. Music from the romantic period is considered “beautiful” by modern audiences, as it contains all those sustained notes and emotional rather than technical emphasis (though not always). I also get the feeling that Mozart wrote a lot of music for parlor rooms, to be heard over the noise of conversation. So, he has distinct melodies, but fewer subtleties than Beethoven.
I think the main point with the Beatles is that while all their songs were not great, they had very few bad, or forgettable numbers. More or less, nearly every single song they put out was at least decent.
If you break it down position by position, the RHCP members are generally fundamentally better (with exception to front men) and Fruscianti and Flea are considered two of the absolute all time greats at guitar and bass. This is reinforced by all time great polls and rankings, with RHCP members being ranked significantly higher than those of the Beatles in most cases. Best alltime guitarist rankings, etc. I mean, it’s hard to find a contemporary guitarist or bass player that doesn’t look up to those guys as heros.
Yes, but we’re comparing bands so the sum of the parts are more important then the individual components and on that level the beattles have RHCP beat. Also take a look at the length of their careers and the amount of music that they put out. The beattles’ music resonates with an entire generation of people and their reach is global. They had an enormous cultural impact and after their dissolution both McCartney and Harrison had very successful solo careers. Honestly, giving that information I really don’t think there is no reasonable person who would think RHCP is the better band. I think yiu just lke being contraian for the sake of being contraian.
As for Tupac, he is unquestionably one of the greatest rappers of all time.
You missed the point. In that quote I highlighted as MUSICIANS in caps, meaning from a technical standpoint… ie how they play their instruments. In the quote you intially responded to I didn’t mean as a band or with regard to their cultural impact. I think you missed what I was getting at with that particular point by bringing those aspects into it. I never argued that RHCP was necessarily a better band. I mean, to make my point, I think Lady Gaga has had significant cultural influence, but as a musician, I wouldn’t rate her very highly. That’s not in any way to take away from what she’s accomplished, I think that those two things are just different categories.
