As far as we know the universe is infinite, so the mathematical probabilities of that happening are roughly 100%.
Also, there are almost definitely intelligent aliens based on what we know about the size of the universe. As far as god goes, that is probably the most likely candidate.
Just because you put the pieces of a watch in a bag and shake it for infinity years does not mean the pieces are just going to magically fit together in order and function.
The idea of a supreme being just existing is just as baffling as the idea that the universe just exists or that it was created by chance. Bertrand Russell has a collection of essays that cover the subject if interested.
That’s true, but it is highly probable they would. Anyway, I think the analogy of a watch to Earth/nature is a little off.
A watch is complex.
A watch has a watchmaker.
Earth is complex.
Earth must also have a watchmaker.
Just because two things share one characteristic does not mean they share another. Just because water and gasoline are both liquid does not mean they are both good to drink.
I can’t prove that things evolved naturally any more that you can prove that god created everything. Neither can be proven. In my mind, that does not make both conclusions equally right. There is no need to for me to assume an entity of which there is no evidence whatsoever (as far as I know) existing. Everything is adequately explained for me without making that assumption.
the problem with theism for me is that it makes you stop asking “why? How?” etc. If its written in the good book then you have to take it for gospel and you stop asking because the answer is god created it, because god is great or Allahu Akbar (god is great in arabic). You are stopping the investigation, you are halting your understanding of the universe, you are closing off the possibility that there are other explanations.
The frightnening possibility that you could be wrong and this place and time you occupy is a mere blip and you are just a mesh of flesh evolved from monkeys, fish, early multi and single celled organisms created by some explosion of matter and star dust sitting on a tiny spinning rock in a universe of infinite proportions. Yes a god is the easy explanation but its not my explanation.
Either. To me, it is a little bit of a manner of semantics. It is very hard for our minds to conceive of infinity. Normal logic would tell you that something has to start everything, perhaps that something could be called god. However, if the universe is truly infinite then maybe there is no need of a begining. People say god is infinite. Interestingly, most of the arguments for why god must exist are answered by the fact of infinityand how hard it is for us to think of that concept. Maybe it is just that infinity is god and vice versa. Interchangable concepts.
I do not believe in the monkey theorem. People who believed in the monkey theorem would subscribe to a watch putting itself together in a shaking bag over infinite years. I just feel that is not possible without an intelligent creator.
I would not say it is completely false. Many hard line religions frown at and even excommunicate those who question their religious texts and teachings, I know because this happened to me in the church that I was raised in. If your realm of questioning is within the context of religious texts written from the viewpoints of people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago and you think that is applicable to the scientific discoveries of today then you and I are in fundamental disagreement and that is ok, just dont try and put your bible in my children’s science classroom.
One thing about astronomy that really makes me feel alone is that the universe is expanding. This is especially true between galaxies, which appear to be expanding at an increasing rate (accelerating). There are almost certainly galaxies that are completely undetectable to earth because of their distance. For example, if a galaxy was 12 billion light years away 12 billion years ago there is zero chance that its light would reach Earth, because the universe is expanding. As the universe continues to expand the light we can see from other galaxies drops and eventually we are left alone with no hope of seeing anything outside of our galaxy EVER. Cheery thought.
