Maybe at some point, but a lot of people seem to give up early. Investment operations departments are FULL of people who have been there for 20-30+ years. I expect that most of them probably became comfortable in that position (and the stable income / hours) relatively early in their careers.

Most don’t consider working in Ops/Back Office “making it” in finance.

I think many people come to redefine “making it” on a personal level over the course of their careers based upon their own limitations. I doubt you’d come across many people in u.g. finance programs, or trying to go from IT > Finance, who’s life dream is to be a manager of the dividends processing department. I think people just need to have more realistic expectations for the industry and the job market before going into finance.
I think cash is your first concern especially if you have loans, so I think you should take the job (if u pass the interview), and then start planning for future education such as masters/CFA/etc. In this economy CFA level 1 may not be a benefit, but if you have nothing else on the resume, then pursuing the designation may have some payoff, not now, but a few years down the line.
wow…after reading about that GM guy, my 35 min 1-way commute doesnt seem all that bad !
If you feel the ppl there are good to work with, take the job. A lot of successful ppl started at worst jobs, so don’t be deterred. Ignore 90% of these guys here making fun of you. these guys here think getting the CFA means the road to millions.
Bump Any updates?
I just saw this. The OP should shoot me an email, I’m from the same location. While jobs are lean, the postings are picking up. I’d be happy to help him out.
Just an update, I did NOT get the job…yeah Now before you jump to the conclusion that I must be the biggest nincompoop in the world, I’d like to point out the manager told me that, although she liked me, they had over 150 applicants for 1 or 2 positions and went with the 2 guys who had the most ‘teller experience’. Well, there ya go…I never thought in my wildest dreams it would be this hard to get a 9-5 that paid over $10 an hour. Crazy bad economy. I’ll shoot you an email Quantjock
You still have about two months before the '10 class hits the job market like the plague. Be creative dude.

I shouldn’t be laughing at this situation, but I can’t help it. The final straw in me spitting out my drink and laughing out loud was this: “Well, there ya go…I never thought in my wildest dreams it would be this hard to get a 9-5 that paid over $10 an hour.” Goddamn I’m glad I graduated in 2007!
Volante, Talk to Quant about his experience working with Numi on his resume and strategy. You might need some “coaching” / direction. Disclaimer: I do not know Numi.
everyone that says level 1 will not land you a job - you have no idea what you are talking about. i like how you guys make these sweeping generalizations about the industry like you know everything. you dont. preparing for level 1 got me my job (equity analyst) - just preparing for it - and also got me an interview with a bulge bracket investment bank (made it to final round). considering i had 0 finance classes or experience before i started studying in december, i highly doubt that i would have been anywhere close to where i am now without level 1. some people do not take the CFA exam out of context and see the value that it really has to offer to anyone who cares to look. i do not feel this exam will make or break my career, but it is a way to point me in the right direction. /rant.

Zero finance experience, and just preparing for level 1 gets you a BB interview for Equity analyst. Once you pass it, you’ll probably be heavily recruited for portfolio manager.
