The things I appreciated most about chad were his self-deprecating humor and self-awareness. Like the time when he kept bragging about being tall and then finally disclosed that he was only 6’2" and we all gave him sh!t about it. He made a series of funny posts after that that poked fun of his own propensity to exaggerate his height and took it all in stride. I saw a NY Post (or was it NY Daily News?) article about him that said police were looking for a 5’10" 200 lb. male when he was reported missing and had to chuckle to myself that chad was probably getting the last laugh on all of us in heaven.
I remember a post from a couple years ago where he admitted that his consulting gig wasn’t going well and that he was looking for a fulltime job. Someone asked him what his income requirements were and he said something like $300K and I remember thinking to myself that that was quite a low number for even a run-of-the-mill Wall Street guy with a few years of experience, much less someone of chad’s incredible caliber in his 40s. Should’ve taken that as a very early warning sign that something was amiss in his world. RIP bro
After finishing work for the day, I log on to AF and see this.
It’s like a kick in the guts.
I never knew Bruce “In real life”, but felt like I did because of his amazing body of posts on AF. He came across as one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever known, and I doubt we’ll see his like again. He had a combination of knowledge, insight, evenhandedness, and humor that was unlike anyone else on the forum (and extremely rare in just about anyone I’ve known in any setting). He touched a lot of folks, and left us better than we were without him.
I’ve been on this site for many years and met Bruce in person at an NYC event along with a few other AFers and the site owner, Chad. I told Bruce how helpful his YouTube videos on FX had been. I think this was in 2012, the year I passed level 3. We walked several blocks together after the event up to penn station where i left him. We exchanged a few emails after that. He was on his way to a salsa dancing class. He also talked about his stand up routines and his consulting. As i recall he was trying to learn R to bid on some work and i sent him some references. What a pity it has come to this. It is never necessary to take ones life over money. There is always hope. I wish he’d reached out to people. Maybe he did. I didn’t see his letter. But he lives on here forever.
Wow back from a long vacation to see this. RIP, he will certainly be missed. Loved to read his take on things and certainly brought some balance to this place
Wow. This is so sad. I never met Bruce but always admired his ability to write such eloquent posts on a variety of different topics.
In my mind I always wondered how could a man so intelligent be struggling to find work and pay his bills? With his knowledge he should have been on wall street or running a company. The man was extremely smart and articulate. His letter explains his struggles and inner battles.
I feel really sad for his partner. This will be hard for her.
Holy shit. First day back on AF after my holiday break and find this out…
I’ll miss bchad’s overly long posts on leftist academic gobblygook. Although we didn’t agree on much, at least he was capable of debating in a civil manner. His loss will be felt.
And, since he was also a stand-up comedian, I’m going to include his name on the list of celebrities that 2016 killed. What a bitch of a year.
(Discussion for another time, but what’s a zipcar?)
Small, short duration rental vehicle service in high density cities. Meant for city dwellers with no personal vehicles to buy groceries or do errands. Advantage is they can be parked/picked up in designated lots around the city.
I believe the point was kr is in love with me and the loss of both bchad and me would be too much for her to handle. If RR were bchad having fun, it wouldn’t matter to her.
Well that was my point originally. I wasn’t referring to the weirdness of it. I think we are well beyond weird (sad, horrible, heart breaking etc) after what happened.
Rather that it would blow if we lost both at the same time
