The Supreme Court appears to have ruled 5-4 that the President can use the Alien Enemies Act to deport the Tren de Aragua gang
Decision
This lifted Temporary Restraining Orders put in place by a DC district court judge.
The Court added that the alleged gang members are entitled to file for Habeas Corpus, but that must take place in the jurisdiction where the gang members are being held (Texas).
The decision was 5-4 with 3 of the 4 swing votes joining the 2 originalists and the other swing vote (Amy Coney Barrett) joining the 3 liberals.
Meanwhile, the administration is downplaying the chances of a new trade deal with Canada.
Secretary Lutnick (Commerce) observed that “They have their socialist regime and it’s basically feeding off of America.”
President posted on Truth Social, “I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH - Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?”
He added during an NBC interview, “Again, remember this, we don’t need their cars, we don’t need their lumber, we don’t need their energy. We don’t need anything."
“We do very little business with Canada. They do all of their business practically with us. They need us, we don’t need them.”
One thing that always got me was the Canadian Content rules on TV and radio.
SCTV’s Bob and Doug McKenzie skits were hilarious!! On the other hand, The Trouble with Tracy was a piece of garbazh!!!
Pretty crazy how it ended up being Carney and not Poilievre. Poilievre would’ve probably suited the Trump administration better.
I’ve seen Poilievre described as Canada’s Mitt Romney.
With the Canadian electoral system, Governor Trudeau actually lost the previous election in 2021. Back then, Trudeau’s party came second in the vote (33.12% vs 34.34% for the winning party) but got the most MPs (157 vs 121).This time, Carney’s party got 43.8% vs Poilievre’s 41.3%.
Poilievre is back in parliament. One of his party’s MPs in Alberta resigned to make way for him and he won the by-election.
It was something of a circus. There were 214 candidates, many from the “Longest Ballot Committee,” and instead of putting a cross next to the name (or whatever they do in Canada), there was a list of candidates at polling stations and voters had to write their choice on a blank ballot.
I’m not sure how many people can spell “Poilievre” and does the vote get counted if you spell it wrong?
The preliminary results don’t mention spoiled ballots.
Added: and seemingly it’s had an immediate effect
Canada caves on retaliatory tariffs
That TACO trade didn’t work too well, Canada has nothing that the US can’t make itself.
"Yet convening disparate parties with different interests is not a sign of weakness. It is what superpowers are uniquely able to do. The spectacle of China shepherding much of the world through Tianjin and Beijing was unimaginable even five years ago. Mr Xi’s guestlist does not demonstrate that China yet runs a new world order. But it does show how much damage Mr Trump is doing to American interests. "
Trump is furious at China, but he’s making US foes great again | CNN Politics
"President Donald Trump is mad that China is palling around with his strongmen friends.
Trump erupted on social media late Tuesday night — US time — as television footage aired of Chinese leader Xi Jinping hosting the authoritarian leaders of Russia and North Korea at a stunning military parade in Beijing."
lol, “a stunning military parade.”
It’s a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2 in the Asia-Pacific.
2 September 1945 when the formal surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri.
The UK has VJ Day on 15 August 1945 when Japan’s surrender was broadcast by Emperor Hirohito.
Some argue that a statement was being made, with even Modi brought into the fold (apparently it was an easy task due to the double whammy delivered by the US administration; Humiliation, vindication—and a giant test for India).
In pictures: China flexes military power at country’s largest-ever parade
China then unveiled dozens of its latest weapons, including nuclear-capable missiles that can be launched from the air, ground or sea, as well as lasers, undersea drones and a “highly intelligent” tank, before concluding the parade with the release of 80,000 doves and 80,000 balloons.
Xi was joined by leaders from Russia, North Korea and Iran in a display of unity against the West by what has come to be called the “Axis of Upheaval.”
There’s a lot being left unsaid here.
There was a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) immediately before hand.
India is a member of SCO and Modi was in China for that.
The SCO Tianjin Summit 2025 was the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which was held from August 31 to September 1, 2025, in Tianjin, China.
The SCO is a continuation and expansion of the Shanghai Five, which dates back to the previous generation, Yeltsin and Jiang
The Shanghai Five group was created on 26 April 1996 when the heads of states of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan signed the Treaty on Deepening Military Trust in Border Regions in Shanghai.
There seem to be a number of these groups (BRICS, SCO, etc) and I couldn’t tell you exactly what kind of animal each one is.
I think this is one of those things where there seems to be a plausible harmless explanation but also a more sinister explanation, depending on your point of view.
