Existing masons run background checks on you though.
Like they would go to your home to make sure you actually live there, and your employment history, your family background, etc. these info are shared with the lodge before the vote takes place.
And you think they can get all these VIP treatments and privileged information and don’t do much in return? Paying fees wouldn’t be enough. It is literally like selling your soul to the devil, according to conspiracy theories.
Of course you have to contribute, you have to share information and use your ability and power to help other masons whenever possible. i don’t know about the selling your soul to the devil part, but you are expected to be loyal to the organization and you are mason for life.
Ever see the movie Breaking Away (and yes, I get that it’s a Simpsons reference)? The IU kids call the locals cutters (because of the limestone in the region). My Dad’s family’s from that area, so I guess I can consider myself one. My great-grandfather was a real Stone Cutter and I know my grandfather was a Mason (because I got a Mason scholarship for college). I’m a legacy.
All the guys from my school that got traditional non-hacksaw finance jobs (IBD at GS, consulting at Accenture, etc) landed through their fraternity alumni connections/parents who are big shots there.
Pretty sure those places don’t even read resumes from my school.
You won the game of life. You may now carry the Stone of Triumph!
Skipping lines, customs, avoiding traffic tickets… I think “preferential treatment” is a very light terminology to define that. A society that really does such things seems more like a society of crooks.
I hope they keep just drinkig fake blood from fake skulls and partying hard.
I would like to know too. I saw a lot of that on campus but it never crossed my mind to join one. If someone wants to join one, how would you even know which one to join?? Is it like a gang?
If you think there is a place on earth that is not corrupted, let me know.
It just depends on the scale and how obvious it is.
Clearly there are a lot of under the table exchanges everywhere you go, i am not saying i want to be part of it, but i am always interested in knowing more.
