CFA, WORTH IT?

Why don’t you want to be a lawyer?

OH OH

CFA won’t help unless you already work for a financial firm, then it will help you network over to the department you want to get in. Let me put it this way, it will help you to get interviews but unless you can tangibly talk about the market and why you consider an investment is undervalued/overvalued, it’s not gonna help. Plus, in order to get those interviews, you still have to network. Just applying to jobs won’t help. You have to actively email and contact hiring managers to express interest. Too many people have experience and/or graduated from top schools applying for the same job. If you really wanna land a job in finance, go to a top 10 business school. PS: I am talking from recent experience

And we are all trying to study for level 3. I will be more than happy to elaborate in 2 to 3 weeks (if I haven’t banned myself from signing onto this forum)

CFA = job insurance at a reasonable price MBA = networking opportunities and job at an expensive price CFA is a value investment MBA is a growth investment

It is certainly worth it if you know you are going to be in the industry for a long time. Simply put, in general it is going to get you more opportunities than the next guy. In this tight job market it is likely to get your resume a longer look, or in most cases now, a look. I most certainly would do it again, but next time I would try to get it done a few years out of college (I was too busy having fun). I honestly think the question is kind of silly as I have yet to see a significant counter-argument despite multiple similar strings. And I am a Level III candidate from Boston, MA.

Montanidate, please tell me you are joking.

FinNinja has nailed it. To add my 2 cents… I think the title itself doesn’t really have too much value, the body of knowledge gained in going through the program has tremendous value if you are interested in or are currently working in the industry. I think without the potential title of CFA Charterholder, it would have been difficult for me to push through and take studying this material seriously. But having gone through it now and understanding how all of these concepts come together in the world of investment management and the world of finance as a whole, I feel that I have a good grasp of what this industry is trying to accomplish along with the other parts of the finance world. Getting to the point of having studied the Level 3 curriculum, that in it of itself is very valuable. But since I’m already here, I might as well just finish it and get my charter.
