To anyone who thinks swearing on trading desks isn’t classy (businesses that have floors above and below), I want to see how they would react if their position went a quarter of a million or any amount worth a month’s salary against them due to a myriad of reasons. Although I have witnessed some crazy $hit, I’m still surprised I haven’t seen worse (like a computer screen being thrown out a window or a physical altercation between colleagues).
Without swearing, someone would get hurt…
^ Agreed. All that anger bottled inside of you will eventually lead to a worst outcome than swearing.
How about violence?
A friend of mine said an old boss as Samsung used to throw those glass ashtrays at people, back in the day. More recently a guy we know got beat on when he gave his resignation, mgr kept beating him in the stairwell until he appologized and reversed his decision to quit. True story, but that’s Asia of course. And it has calmed down since.
Worked for a female psychopath once, the real deal. Someone crossed her one day, and I accidentally walked into the office during the confrontation. It was the only time I ever saw her with her mask off. If there were not social rules she would have murdered that accountant right there with the pen she was grasping so hard her knuckles turned white. Scary. Spun around and got the fuck out of there. She called me back in 10min later, her mask back on, everything perfectly normal, there was this unspoken “I know you saw that, and know what I am, but we aren’t going to talk about that”. A little creepy, but she gave me massive raises. Actually I worked for another pure psycho too, a name IB guy. Dude never lost his shit, ever. He probably played around with people’s blood at home, but in the office the mask never budged. I know he meditated. If he ever lost it people would die, on a mass scale. Maybe finance people are blood thirsty maniacs?
I think it’s unprofessional but at the same time, I wouldn’t judge a person who did curse. I’m more concerned about it offending someone else. I picked up the habit working in sales and have to really watch myself. If you say the same words, day in and day out for years, and hear it in music everyday, it becomes a part of your vocabulary.
Funny story, when i was at the car dealership, this guy was making follow-up calls to clients who stopped by. He had his speakerphone on and i sat down to listen to a voicemail he was leaving. “Hey ____, this is _____, just wanted to call you for stopping by… ect ect… sales b.s. hope to hear from you soon!”
The guy hits a button on the phone, and says, “f***in bitch”. A few seconds later, he realizes he didn’t hang up the call right. Guy turns white, eyes wide open HAHAHHA
Phones are dangerous. And with speaker phone you can’t tell someone is on…
Anybody that doesn’t participate in / enjoy hearing swearing at work should be summarily rounded up and put on a f***ing island somewhere.
I’m going to disagree with the group here. I dont think you need to swear - what does it prove? You’re tough guy? You just lost a lot of money? You’re pissed?
There are other ways to deal with said emotions. I personally (probably an instinct i picked up from all my years of poker) is to bundle it deep within and release it when im working out or fighting. I usually view those unable to control their emotions as weak and not to be trusted.
Furthermore, why let anyone else know the state you are in. If you lost money trading, why broadcast it? If you are upset with someone, why give them the opportunity to know how you feel.
Actions speak louder my friends.
Agreed. I have a lot more respect for people that are able to keep their heads when others around them are losing theirs.
Plus, like Tony Dungy said, there are 800,000 words in the English language, of which about 20 are extremely offensive. Can we not just use the other 799,980 words instead?
Yeah, I think it is pretty unprofessional to curse at work. Unless you’re doing it in a joking manner.
