If the synthetic diamonds become a big enough threat, I fully expect that the diamond cartel will manage to get legislation passed in all the major markets requiring synthetic diamonds to have some sort of identifiable mark that will make them less desirable.
regardless, I fully expect an underground diamond industry emerging which proceeds to flood the market, and demand to be super strong for it. The tech is not that hard, and I’m sure greedy individuals that want to cash in will do so.
Once diamonds become as abundant as man-made pearls, the fairy tale will finally come to an end. and all men will come together and rejoice.
There is a guy at work who believes buying diamond second hand is bad because they will have attached negative emotions (otherwise it would still be in their family). Therefore he refuses to buy them. Thoughts?
My wife’s diamond has a serial number laser engraved on the side which is only visable under a microscope. Whenever she has the ring cleaned, they show her the engraving to confirm she is getting her stone back. The legislation could require synthetic diamonds to have “Synthetic” engraved on them. While no one would be able to see it with the naked eye, the Mrs. would see it eventually. No problem if she doesn’t care, but a lot of women will care that you bought them a “fake” diamond instead of the “real” thing to avoid spending a few thousand extra dollars on them.
agreed. if your woman cares, dump her. people barely care about conflict diamonds, do you think many will care about synthetic? in fact, you could say to your lady that getting a synthetic diamond is progressive and is easing world poverty, slavery and abuse.
Whether or not my lady, your lady, Swan’s lady, etc. cares or doesn’t care is irrelevant. Many, many, many ladies will care and as a result there will be a stigma associated with synthetic diamonds. People have been trying to shame the diamond industry for decades and it hasn’t worked, so why would the poverty, slavery, abuse angle work now? Every woman in America saw Blood Diamond because of Leo and a lot of them probably swore they would never wear diamonds again, but I doubt many of them turned down the diamond earrings they got a few birthdays later.
I do not expect natural diamonds to decline in value, even if they are not intrinsically more valuable or in any way really better than the alternative. I bet artificial diamonds will be distinguishable from natural diamonds, because artificial diamonds will not have impurities. It’s like Persian carpets - if it’s too perfect, you know it’s machine made.
simple economics 101 dude. the previous shaming was simply waving banners and trying to influence demand. with the power to make real diamonds now, you now wield the ability to change the supply curve.
did any of you actually read the article LMAO ZIPS
■ To prevent fraud, the near-gem has the words “Lab Produced” lasered on the underside — a code invisible to the naked eye that can only be seen through a microscope.
So there you have it, I’ve already been proven right on at least half of my prediction. Now time will tell how many guys are going to opt for the diamond that has “FAKE” printed on it instead of the “real” thing. I suspect that most women will be fine buying jewelry with “Lab Produced” diamonds for themselves, but will expect their man to pony up for the real deal. Afterall, what’s a few thousand extra for a lifetime of love?
Wait, isn’t the implication now that lab diamonds are produced by, or otherwise aligned with, the same companies that mine natural diamonds? If not, why would the bother to make this rule?
it. won’t. matter. it’s the same thing that happend with pearls people. “natural” vs “cultured” peals, no one gave a damn after the initial “eww, these are fake peals”.
and I’m 90% sure the temptation to produce real diamonds, not stamp anything on them, and then sell to the market is super high. it will happen internationally easily. heck, I’d do it myself if I had the connections.
