Don't be that guy who...

I don’t worry about the tax, an extra 15 or 20% on 8% of tax amounts to between 1% and 2% of the total bill, and less in lower tax areas. I often maker bigger adjustments just by rounding off to an even number. Perhaps because I default to 15%, doing it after tax and rounding up is intrinsically more generous and helps balance out the thought that maybe I’m being too stingy.

I’ll consider separating out the tax if the bill starts getting to be much over $100, but by the time I get there, they’ve often added the tip automatically, anyway.

aight real quick. to go food. tip or no tip? i was juss at a pretty expensive place bagel and egg sandwich is 10 bucks. do i tip if i pick it up or not.

I agree 15% pre tax and post tax aren’t going to break your wallet, and if it does, maybe get takeout next time. But some people argue based on principles, heck, wars have been fought for less.

no tip. What is that tip for? putting your order in a plastic bag? (the kitchen has already wrapped it up to go). Is that extra 4 seconds worth $1?

No tip. And $10 bucks for a bagel and egg sandwich? Jeez. Today I had a takeaway lunch of piece of fish and two sides for $6.

I don’t have the habit of tipping at places like Starbucks or take-out chinese, but if you’re a regular there and the staff doesn’t turn over like rabbits, I sometimes think it makes sense to put a little in the jar once in a while to build goodwill. Just make sure they see you do it.

When I see a tip jar at a place like that, my mind alternates between “Tips for take-out? (not even delivery)” and “Wow, these people must be paid squat if they’re reduced to begging for tips in a jar.” I wonder if the tips jar is there so that the employer can pay them below the minimum wage.

What do you guys think about tipping in coffee shops? I’ve seen people giving a dollar tip to their $4.50 lattes.

I don’t tip takeout unless it’s a really extreme order. Coffee shops, if I pay with cash, I’d leave a dollar or change, and with card I’d round to the next whole number. Only because I usually go to cafes to study for ages, not the morning coffee commuter.

If you dont want to tip at starbux, just say no receipt.

I hate tip jars though. I’ve seen it in places where there shouldn’t be any. Tips should never be asked for. It’s so tacky. And then it gives the cheapos some smugness to say ‘see–they’re panhandling’ whereas if tips weren’t asked for, waitstaff can look down on cheapos and judge. It’s a small point, but sometimes small victories matter.

I’ve seen people who basically look like hobo’s on the street stand in front of restaurants or casual eat places holding the door open and asking for a tip.

dude, that’s not a tip, that’s still called begging for money. If holding a door open gets you a dollar, everyone working at the restaurant should quit their job and just hold open the door lol

I usually tip $1 at coffee shops. For one thing, people tip a lot in the city I live in, and it is kind of expected. Maybe that’s why so many hipsters are moving here.

When I was studying for hours at a time in coffee shops, I would tip very well. It’s a lame job and most of the people working there were putting themselves through school.
