thats unfortunate but there is zero chance you can have it overturned.
policy clearly states a passport is needed, which you failed to present
if they allow this one time, imagine the slippery slope, ID cards/ drivers licenses.

Very unfortunate. Also, your Dutch ID card is not an internationally approved travel document, it is a European approved travel document. You can fly to Spain with it, sure. Can you fly to the US with it, definitely not.
