Rahul makes duplicate accounts to provoke people. No further proof is necessary. I question the mental faculties of anyone who cannot see this.
Yes, banning rahul will make me post better stuff, because I will not be angry and waste time on things like this discussion. Fixing Copy/Paste would also help.
I disagree that people have nothing to say in WC any more. The problem is that energy is being channeled to less productive purposes (again, this discussion).
WC has the benefit of keeping older people on the site. Maybe this is a disadvantage too. But I don’t expect industry people with actual experience to hang around on a forum that is exclusively exam related. I have personally helped people here in their work, careers, and school. Other people are presumably even more helpful.
It it really that much of a cess pit, or is it just boring?
There was always crappy stuff here, it’s just that there used to be good stuff too.
We can say that crappy posters have scared good posters away, but good posters don’t get scared that easily. And it’s not as if there are all that many other forums to swtich to outside of AF. WSO maybe? ZeroHedge?
So where have the good posters gone?
Their creative posts have gone to other sections of AF (that’s partly the goal)
The industry contracted and they are no longer in the industry
They got promoted or took over laid-off colleagues roles and don’t have time for AF anymore
They are still here but ran out of new stuff to say.
Perhaps the best way to proceed is for us to say what kinds of stuff we want to see in WC (that wouldn’t go elsewhere) so we can try to target and support those topics, rather than just whine about the fact that our free entertainment isn’t entertaining enough.
It is boring and a cesspool. I stopped posting (and I posted frequently in the investment forum) because I didn’t want to waste my time on a childish forum. If I’m going to post occasionally at work, it should at least feel professional and intelligent. I have talked to other former posters who said the same. They outgrew it because the forum refused to grow. You can claim that good posters don’t get scared off that easily, but that’s just stupid. This isn’t junior high, I’m not trying to dare people into posting on a stupid annoymous forum. The fact is people just left because of it. You could add upvotes and downvotes to be just like reddit’s finance subforum, but that forum already exists, so why would you waste the energy to go that route. There’s no value add, if people want to post there, they can. Just police it or shut it down, really.
you add the functionality so forums are self-moderated, and mods don’t have to do as much work. it is energy to implement but certainly saves the mods from axing childish posts that would be downvoted to oblivion, so not a waste of energy IMO
You obviously have no idea how reddit works. The various finance subreddits (there are several and I post on a few) are strickly moderated so everything stays on-topic. They would directly compete with your favorite forum, Investments. The WC serves a completely different function and you know it. The lot of us have been around for several years and to simply say “go find somewhere else to post” is a dick move. I’d rather help make this site better (like I did when I suggested creating your favorite forum. You’re welcome).
Like you said, you don’t come around here too often. So why are you so in favor of deleting it? Just ignore us and go about your day.
As for upvotes, they would serve a much greater function in the other forums than the WC. Sure, we’d downvote spammers to get rid of them. But, think about a voting system for the CFA boards, Careers, and Investments. Being able to upvote good advice and downvote bad advice would add a ton of value. Everyone always assumes I want the voting system just for the WC. No, not at all. It would make all of AF a much better place.
Ok, I have an idea. If and only if Chad decides to get rid of the WC I’ll start a WC subreddit. I’ll be the mod and we could keep our community together. I’d really rather not do this for a few reasons, but if it’s our only alternative, I don’t want to lose touch with some of the folks on here I consider friends in the Internet sense of the word (and more than a few of you I think I could count on IRL).
The drawbacks would be the transition, obviously. We’d lose some people along the way and that’d suck. Also, some people can’t access reddit at work (though I think most can. If you can’t, let me know and I won’t even bother). And, I’d kindly request Chad put a sticky on top of the General Discussion board to point those AFers, both old and new, to the subreddit for off-topic discussions. All would be welcome.
Essentially, Chad, I’ll take the WC off your hands if you really don’t want it anymore.
I would support this, also I do actually understand the great Reddit as difficult as that may be for a you to process. I think we need to kill off the WC fanboys and get AF back on track towards semi-constructive dialogue. We went through this once before in the early years before any of these guys were even around to remember it (AFOT) and AF was much more stronger in the years following. I think it just needs a refresh.
I particularly love all the people saying democracy is the best way and pointing to reddit, who does in fact moderate strictly.
^I’d prefer to make it public. If RR shows up we’d just downvote him to oblivion.
If plenty of us moved over and didn’t want it any bigger then I could see going private. Or, there could also be a chance to team up with the other finance subreddits and get on their sidebar. We’d be the place to go for people in the financial services industry to talk about whatever. I could see it working pretty well.
Oh, and if Chad endorses us, I’d gladly put a sticky up top directing people here for their test-related questions.
To be clear I didn’t mean to imply you didn’t understand how reddit works as a site. I meant directing us “WC Fanboys” to reddit’s finance subs wouldn’t be appropriate. We would have no sense of community and our off-topic discussions wouldn’t be tolerated. Then I had my epiphany.
I like the WC sub idea if this gets tanked, I use reddit quite a bit. The community here seems much closer than most subs I am involved in which is really nice though. I constantly tell people on the CFA sub to come here for more specific quesitions, I would imagine it would be happy to link here.
