How to quit your job

so you have a deposit down on one? wink

Hey man, you could be getting some reverse cowgirl tonight. congrats!

Ford Raptor?

YUUUGE Green Egg?

This was going to be my input. Raptor or bust.

New dilemma: My old boss wants me to work until Jan 31 for 50 hours a week. My new boss wants me to start ASAP, but realizes that giving two weeks is a professional courtesy. And my wife thinks im crazy for giving my old boss any more time than the absolute minimum.

Solution–I go into work tomorrow and quit immediately. (It’s the end of a pay period, so it works out nicely.) I then offer to work on contract until Jan 31, as many hours as he’s willing to pay for, at a hefty premium. (In other words, as much as I think I was worth the whole time.). And my old boss can either take it or leave it.

Women, amirite6?

You already have the new job lined up - 2 weeks is a professional courtesy.

After all the crap they put you through, you shouldn’t feel bad skipping the 2 weeks.

wait what - Saturdays are required for that job?

Yea it’s amazing. He disclosed this in the other thread. Crazy! Not just tax season, but almost all weeks

Agree with your wife. Your ideas good too though. Try and get some extra from old boss if you can

Congrats Greeie on your new job. I like your wife’s suggestion. Also don’t buy a car. Save and invest your new money. Buying an asset like a house or a rental is better. Anyways best of luck.

Is 50 hours a week considered a lot in Texas?

A few observations:

  1. Isn’t it an a-hole move to quit an accounting firm in January right before busy season kicks in?
  2. Possible (read likely) scenario with 72-year old: He finds himself in January and about to get flooded with hundreds of tax returns, and he isn’t properly staffed to handle it. By January, it is slim pickings for competent accountants, and all unemployed ones should be viewed with skepticism. Staffing for Busy Season should be locked down by Christmas at the latest, or else you are in a bind, like this guy may be.
  3. Consistent 50 hours weeks outside of busy season is nuts
  1. Maybe. But (1) this job has been a bait and switch the whole time, (2) he paid me about 60% of what I really think I’m worth, and (3) the other guy needs help too.

  2. I don’t think he is behind the 8 ball or understaffed. I think he just wants to retire soon, and wants somebody who can take his place. I’m the only person he has met with who has both the tax background and the investment licenses and is interested in taking over. Everybody else focuses on one of the two areas or only wants to be an employee.

  3. I agree. Probably the main reason I am leaving. New firm’s hours are 9-4 Mon-Thu and 9-12 on Friday. About 30 hours a week (outside of tax season).

So I sent the email. I told him (politely) that I was being pulled between a new job that paid much better than he did, my family, and him. So to align everybody’s interest, I have him three options.

  1. Work on Monday for eight hours so I can pass off all the stuff I’m working on. Then leave at the end of Monday.
  2. Work a standard 8 hour day for the next two weeks. Take my last 2.5 days of vacation beginning on Friday at noon and ending on Tuesday the 31st.
  3. Work as many hours as he wants for a flat per-hour fee (which is about twice as much as he’s paying me now.).

I told him to tell me on Monday.

Hopefully the Cowboys win so he’ll be in a good mood tomorrow.

I like it.

Hes pretty much going to pick #2. You know this though - you’re cool with that?
