Institutional salespeople - what's their role?

I don’t cover equities but its clear you’re being underserved and you should consider establishing relationships with other providers. Perhaps your account just isn’t very big to him, I have clients I don’t spend much time on, but either way because this market is so competitive, while you may be taken for granted by one person, someone else will gladly eat his lunch.

My role is a bit different because I work primarily with corporates and smaller institutions, so that my exposure to HF’s and MFs is not as great. However, generally my role is to go out and prospect, engage with existing and potential clients. provide market updates/forecasts, discuss specific issues and try and develop an understanding of my client’s processes/needs/views so I can pitch the right service or product to them or introduce them to our internal specialists that will be able to structure more sophisticated services for them. Effectively I am just a middle man with, all good sales people are, and I fucking love it.

How high up was the guy? An MD in institutional sales typically prioritizes new business, not maintaining existing relationships. He was probably supposed to pass on the task to a more junior person, but forgot about it. That being said, sell-side S&T are getting skewered on all fronts, so that junior guy who was supposed to get back to you may not even exist anymore.

Also, if you’re an existing buy-side client, don’t you get access to their database of research reports? You shouldn’t have to ask for them manually as they come out so frequently and are often thrown in the face of clients anyways.
