Palantir, I’m 90% invested at this time. don’t want to fully disclose in case someone traces those to me… For my latest portfolio (fresh money) starting in around August, I’m down about 5% largely owing to the euro bank which I have a sizesable position in (10%). i don’t do much diversification.
I see you’re in Canada, what’s your opinion on Fairfax Financial? I believe they are selling at BV, and like Buffet, Prem Watsa has long said that BV vastly underestimates FV.
stfu about fairfax. yes, that is actually an investment i looked at (read all the letters to shareholders) but i ended up sucking my thumb.i could have made 20% but i didn’t and instead bought some other underperforming stocks. overall, the insurance operations are not as good or even close to berkshires. also, i don’t like the portfolios as much. he tends to do a lot more “distressed” investing. but his biggest holdings includes WFC, JNJ. however, 100% of their equity exposure is hedged. he also has a sizesable position on low interest rates. i believe that book value you’re looking at (1x) includes preferred shares, so adjusting for that, you’re paying around 1.1x. perhaps still a good idea. he might actually be equal to buffet in terms of growing shareholder value (BV grew by over 20% if i recall over 25 years).
Anyone been watching the Long RIMM / Short GRPN trade over the last couple of days?
no, but i know RIM has been doing poorly…
Looks like the last couple days have been alright. Anyone with a BB terminal should run the pair trade, screen shot it, and link to it. I haven’t found a free service that’ll graph a long/short trade correctly. http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=GRPN+Interactive#chart4:symbol=grpn;range=5d;compare=rimm;indicator=ke_sd+ke_ud+split+volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=on;source=undefined
umm it was up 11% yesterday and 1% today while Groupon is down about 5%
Takeover rumors at RIMM but apparently the co-CEO’s don’t want any takeover. Morons. Someone needs to get rid of those guys.
All right I’m looking for some investment ideas. I want a boring industrials company, preferably one that few has heard of, that produces consistent free cash flow year after year. Any ideas? Something along the lines of EMR or ITW, I don’t like them though because of pricing. PH looks interesting.
Palantir, I am quite attracted to the chemical space with companies like Eastman chemical (EMN) looking quite attractive in valuation terms. There another one Lanxess (LXSX) - however the latter trades on the DAX and I am not sure how willing you are to venture outside the US. The other one I have been looking at for some time is Caterpillar. Produces tonnes of cash. But again I am a bit nervous about its valuation. One that might not be exactly what you’re looking for but quite attractive in terms of valuation is Leucadia National Corp (LUK). It is more of a special situation because its a mix of different businesses which I think is causing the undervaluation at this point. let me know what you think
Long RIMM Short GRPN started the year with a bang! RIMM up 8.3% GRPN down 7.3%
Yo do you have skype? we should exchange more investment ideas. For a finance forum, there doesn’t seem to be much discussion here.
go palantir go. actually, you should go to seekingalpha or something if you want investment ideas. ppl here are just doing their CFAs or trolling (like myself) so ideas are going to be limited at best… btw, i saw Amanda Lang on High Definition, she isnt’ that hot. i noticed she has some crooked teeth. still, a classy babe…
Good discussion guys. Seekingalpha is a bit of a mess, in my opinion anyway. Cheers for that. I’m sure MANY others are reading this and have benefited from it too.
i wager no one got in on the trade…
what a trade! since my post RIMM’s down 3% GRPN is down 24% !
what a trade! since my post RIMM’s down 3% GRPN is down 24% !
Nice trade. Have you closed it out?
I’m really amazed at this call.
Did you close out the positions on GRPN and RIMM yet?
