Looks like my MBA program wont let me sit for my Level 1 exam in December

Honestly you have nothing to lose by writing a strongly worded appeal, worst case they just say ‘no’ again.

The fact that a business school with (presumably) a finance program wouldn’t be cognissant of when the CFA exams are is a bit shocking; any professors in the finance faculty should be extremely supportive of students pursuing the designation. You may want to try contacting someone in the finance department to try and get some backing from someone who (ideally) has a charter.

Right. I realize I probably won’t reap the benefit immediately, but in 10 years I will be eligible to apply for any and all jobs that require an MBA. They don’t say they require an MBA 5 years after undergrad, they just require the check box to tick that you have one. I realize I’ll be entering an entry level undergrad job upon graduation, but that’s fine. I don’t want to deal with stopping my career and coming back to school for two years

i already wrote the appeal and was denied by the director of the program. Are you saying I try speaking with the president of the school or some such?

to be honest, I don’t know. I was certainly not informed of it until just this week as I was signing up for classes. But it definitely/likely may have existed. I don’t get the feeling that it’s new or anything

Good point. One of the main talking points of the appeal was the benefit passing all three levels would have and how it would reflect positively on the school. Didn’t think about discussing specifically that one level

thanks. My concern has been that I don’t want to berate them and just continue asking and hammering and not give up forest that they might get mad and say “fine, don’t like our program, go somewhere else.” And kick me out

You can take CFA on Sunday as well. Just submit the exception form to CFA.

wut. I have never heard of this. You trollin?

You can get religious exception to take CFA on Sunday. That i know for sure. The rest is up to you.

BTW, If it is not a TOP 2 MBA, I would just quit MBA and would never mention the fact that you even attended the school

hmm interesting. Thanks

have never understood this school of thought. What exactly is it that’s so magical that’s being taught at these top 2 schools that invalidates everything from anywhere else? Never seen a job posting that says “top 2 MBAs only. All you other bitches are out of luck. Idiots”

You’ll have to convert to Judaism though, so I hope you’re already circumcised.

Obviously they don’t include that in the posting, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen behind the scenes.

Why wouldn’t they post that if it’s the case? They post GPA requirements, skill set requirements, work experience requirements, etc. why not also under education requirements? anyone that thinks there are only two schools in the entire world that a worthwhile employee can come from are probably delusional and would be a crappy company to work for. Guess they wouldn’t hire warren buffet or bill gates since they aren’t graduates of top 2 business schools

You seem like a nice kid but you’ve got a long way to go.

According to their website, all the jobs I was interested in several years ago only required a bachelor’s degree, with CFA or MBA preferred.

In reality, all the jobs required a bachelor’s degree from a top 50 school, several year’s experience, an MBA from a top 20 school, and the CFA charter.

Vandelay, I think the same way you would reconsider working for a company that expressly stated they would only hire a Top 2 MBA you should reconsider a school that doesn’t show any value for the CFA or Work Experience. I’m still young as well so don’t take my words as the bible, but you WILL see discrimination based on your education (if it’s not from a higher tier). It’s just the way this industry works (or maybe the city I live in). I’ve had people tell me “I see you went to Local State University. I’ve never interviewed anyone from there before we usually only take kids from X, Y, Z.” This is not a lie and this wasn’t even for a big IB type job.

This is just food for thought. A friend who just got accepted in Columbia MBA told me that it’s a reset button for your career. The caveat is you can only press it once. Don’t waste your second life before you even saw where your first one took you.

If that is indeed the case, then what am I supposed to do? With only a summer and a fall semester left, an MBA from a non-top school with a high GPA has to be better than the alternative of no MBA at all. All I can do is graduate and do the best I can. It’s not as if I can just magically transfer to Harvard or something

Thanks for the thoughts, man. I mean, I dont know what I can really do. It’s not like I can just get up and move to an Ivy League school with one semester left and graduate from there. The reality is I pretty much have to finish this thing out. Then just do the best I can from there. My dad has his MBA from a local state univeristy and it has served him very well. He had a great business career and even spend 10 years teaching college. Both graduate and undergraduate levels. I think people on this forum tend to overblow stuff like attending a top 2 school. For instance, this article seems to dispute the top 2 notion
