But surely we must consider the needs of the old and overweight people in professional golf, as they might have difficulty bending down to use short putters. You don’t want this to become a sport where only athletic people can compete, do you?
Belly putters should still be allowed at the amateur/country cub level just not at the professional level. I don’t want to take away from his win, but Adam Scott could not make a putt prior to using that belly putter.
If you are a professional golfer and cannot bend down, you should retire.
I’m torn as to whether or not anchored putters should be allowed for amateurs or not. I certainly don’t want to make the game unplayable for old hackers who just can’t bend down anymore, but having a single set of rules for everyone has been one of the fundamentals of golf from the beginning. The vast majority of guys using anchored putters on the PGA tour are not doing so for health related reasons though, they are using them because they lack the steady nerves needed to use a real putter.
In case it was not clear, I was being cynical in the previous comment, since professional golf does not seem to have the same rigorous physical requirements as most other sports.
They should be allowed at the amateur level. They have different tee boxes to accomodate shorter/older hitters so I don’t see much difference allowing belly putters. I just hate that guys with suspect putting strokes (Els, Scott etc.) are now sinking putts from everywhere because of these belly putters.
Yeah golfers are not the most athletic bunch…Scott is in good shape, but I bet Cabrera would struggle to run a 5k.
I look at Cabrera and say, “That man is only 14 years older than me” and get depressed. Tiger is only six years younger than him.
Why do you say that? I think if Tiger hadn’t hit that flagstick on 15 on Friday he would have won this one. Without the penalty we could assume he would have had a birdie on that hole and would conceivably had a much less frustrating weekend. The fact that he was still in contention until the around the 15th on Friday in spite of this makes me think he’s still the greatest.
Scott is too pretty. I hate it when good looking guys win. I wanted Angel and his big belly to win.
Tiger will have as good a chance as anyone at winning the Masters for several more years. The Open also returns to Royal Liverpool next year and St. Andrews in 2015 and Tiger has won at both before. The PGA returns to Valhalla next year and Tiger won there in 2000. He is #1 in the world again and the only 3 time winner on tour so far this year. There is no objective reason to believe that he will never win another major. I hope I’m wrong because I can’t stand him, but his play this year suggests that 19 majors is once again very possible.
