Pathetic talk. Those “innocents” kill each other as well. And America is only as interest. They collaborate with one Arabs or mid-eastern people against other too today. Tomorrow, they’d probably simply swap the sides.
Haha, obviously I touched a sensitive spot pointing out you cowardly behavior. Hope quitting when things get tough didn’t become a lifelong problem for you.
BS, you really draw hard moral lines about the military. Comes off as quite offensive to me and I’m not even a fan of the military. Seems strange to me how strong your posts on this topic always tend to be
A bloated “Defense” force that eats a fifth of the federal budget, hasn’t been deployed to directly defend US soil in a century and creates regional instability what’s not to love? Give the participants stickers on their chests, make a few propaganda films and a holiday and keep the pipeline full.
Just creates global messes ad nauseam, churns through lowest common denominator enlistees, pulls money away from useful causes and perpetuates war crimes we later whitewash.
Nerdy loves to point out that at least it creates employment for the bottom feeders but pause and just think about the fact that we have infrastructure graded routinely at a D+ with NYC basically caving in on itself, running a deficit and we’re blowing $600B a year on force projection and war crimes. You could easily re-purpose that funding and those jobs in far more productive ways.
I mean we can make the same argument for useless old people which is social security.
and poor unproductive people which is Medicare. Both of those is 50 percent of the budget. At least the army is instilling fear in every other country.
i like the idea of soft power where people know not to touch me because I am American and that if they do that they will receive balls of fury!
I kind of agree with BS, eww I just threw up a little in my mouth typing that. Except for the name calling, hyperbole and bizarre reference to Mai Lai massacre…I agree the military budget is bloated. The $600b is only the base budget and doesn’t even include another $150b or so in contingency spending to fight ISIS, foreign terrorists in general, and the VA.
Better question to ask to Nerdy’s point, is why we can’t have guns AND butter? Surely we can have an absolutely lethal, elite fighting force at half or less than the current budget…and decent infrastructure in NYC.
I mean most of the rhetoric was just trolling that Malee kept engaging with far longer than I initially anticipated (truce btw). He made some simplistic comment basically sh*tting on people in poverty areas for not just moving like two threads ago and talked about joining the Army. So I started in on him about it and by the end I was basically committed to seeing how many innings it would go to.
That said to your prior point and for Greenman’s sake I don’t actually have anything against people that want to be army man. I mostly just dislike the bloat but do genuinely hate the people directing foreign policy that keep using this thing as a heavy stick to keep making bigger messes when they can’t handle themselves like a normal person. There’s definitely a sacred cow culture that has sprung up around the military that only serves to further its interests. Want to talk about immigration? You’re a racist. Want to talk about the fact that the military has appropriated the US federal complex? You hate America and veterans. Pretty much how it goes.
I’m not saying war definitively isn’t hell like the saying goes. But its hard not to call bullsh*t looking at all the multi-generational military families; how much we spend on it; how many movies, monuments and holidays romanticize it; and the fact that we keep jumping into every unrelated war we encounter. If war is hell and as a veteran you encourage your kid to enlist are you a sh*tty parent?
