NYC Native Killed by Lion on Safari

What? Articles always contain the full story? The article is accurate as far I know, but I would think do to editorial constraints does not include the 1000s of pages necessary to include every detail of her life and every hike she has completed. Anyway, the article implied no woman has climbed Denali in the winter? Does that mean solo? Surely a woman has made it with a team…

And I don’t think death means you don’t know what you’re doing. Experienced guides have been killed in different parts of the world on climbs they’ve accomplished dozens of times, no? Haven’t entire mountaineering teams been lost over the years…or is my memory mistaken… Possible to be overconfident and make a poor decision I would think. Happens all the time in general aviation.

Denali is almost never climbed in winter by anybody. In winter it has winds so strong people have been flash frozen and killed by random gusts.

those situations you’re referring to almost never happen in the whites due to the level of weather forecasting capabilities

I only remember this becuase the movie The Day After Tomorrow pissed me off so much, but people can’t flash freeze like that (assuming that’s what you meant). They can (and do) die from prolonged exposure to extremely cold temps, but you can’t “flash freeze” from a single gust of wind. (Nor would you instantly die in outer space, either from the pressure or cold. The pressure would get you first, about 90 seconds until death. If you could survive the vacuum for some reason, it would take several minutes to die from the -220 degree temp of space.)

Here’s an article on all the stupid science in The Day After Tomorrow including the relevant paragraph on why people don’t flash freeze:

  • Things take time to cool down. One reason that air has much less effect at very high or low temperatures than solid objects is that air conducts heat a lot less effectively than solid objects. (One way to increase the effectiveness of air is to move it, and have it bodily carry heat away, hence the wind-chill effect). A person exposed to -150 F air might freeze his nasal passages if he’s not careful. Exposed tissue would freeze very quickly, and the person would be at extreme risk of dying quickly of hypothermia even with thick clothing. But he wouldn’t freeze solid instantly. Nor would fuel in the fuel lines of a helicopter. (Much more likely: the oil and hydraulic fluids would get too thick to function properly.) This is easily the worst blooper in the film. Nor would the air cool things so quickly that the cold would penetrate a thick door in seconds.

Yeah the term may be misleading. I don’t think they mean frozen to ice, but climbers have certainly died there from single gusts of winds in deaths referred to as flash freezing. If you google “Denali flash frozen” you’ll see what I’m referring to.

Wind gusts there go below -150 F with wind chill.

I think that if you die, you did something wrong.

Unless you’re trying to committ suicide. Then you did it right.

Apparently, the girl got knocked over and blown off the trail. She was injured in the fall and died of exposure. The speculation, based on her track, obtained from some sort of gps device she had, is that she was retreating with the wind at her back, looking like she thought it best to call it a day and was heading to the safety of the treeline. Almost incomprehensible that she would not have checked the weather. She must have. Read something about the really high winds moving in faster than expected. She probably thought she could handle it and she was wrong. Maybe she just had a freak accident and lost her footing. Maybe she would have survived 99 out of a hundred times…How can anyone know for sure…

Just read about peole getting struck by lightning IN their homes. Should have evacuated for that summer thunderstrom. Stupid people. Let’s give them a Darwin Award.
