Ugly pass…still wondering how on earth I passed. I did CFAI books for levels 1 and 2 but this year had no time. Focused on Schweser only, felt relatively well prepared. No question came up that I didn’t study in Schweser. The killer was that I completely screwed up by nerves on first question, did not take enough time to read it, then realised I messed up the IPS, and ended up redoing everything, and spending over an hour on question 1. Had to rush through the rest of the morning session, resulting in morning carnage. I never had problems with timing at levels 1 and 2. Advice to 2011 exam takers is to ace the afternoon sessions and manage your time most efficiently in the morning to limit damage. CFA Jay, the pass breakdown clearly indicates, imo, that this year was much much harder than past years. I personally thought the 2007-2009 exams were much more straightforward than this year’s. When I finished the first half, I remember walking outside and laughing b/c I knew that I got completely destroyed. I have to imagine that the pass score was close to 60% given the poor scores with passes, including mine. I know I was right on the cusp, no idea how I passed given my score breakdown. But I put over 300 hours into studying and, like I said, I was very comfortable with the old exams and the CFA practice exam going into this. Guys, did anyone back out their actual score out of 60 on the afternoon? I figured out I got between 43 and 52 out of the 60 questions. (So 72%-86%) Did anybody pass with a lower range, or did anyone fail with a higher range?

I’m guessing the actual score was probably near the middle around 80%, but I’ll never know or really even care.

I really thought I did well enough to pass this year, even thought I did OK in the morning session. I have been attempting level 3 on and off for over the past 7 or 8 years. (did pass L1 and L2 on first try in the early 2000s… I also satisfied requirements for being a Regular Member of CFA Institute a few years ago). This year I thought was my best year yet I could not go over the hurdle. I have to seriously think about committing the necessary resources for another attempt or just face the fact that I’m not destined with the CFA charter. From the above, we know the MPS is between 233 and 308 (between 65% and 86%) … with more samples like the above we can probably narrow the range substantially.
