That’s not the same argument at all. Can’t own a gun at all is not the same as not being able to buy a high capacity gun or concealed carry. I declare victory over BS
Guys, its really ignorant to be sitting here debating the luxury of defensive firearms when approximately 10,000 people die a year from non-suicide gun deaths.
I think we should take it one step further and ban alcohol following the approximately 10,000 deaths from drunk driving last year as well as the epidemic of domestic violence, broken homes, gambling problems, suicides, poor heath, substance addiction, violence and crime that has been linked to this destructive drug. But I guess we’ll all just sit here and glorify it in commercials backed by the alcohol lobbiests while we wait for the next Astronaut Halsell to kill a young family in a random act of drunk driving.
We need a federal ban to stop drinking and violence completely like it did in the roaring 20’s, the same way the assault weapon ban stopped gun violence and school shootings like Columbine in the 90’s.
I never said there would be a complete ban and doesn’t change the validity of the framework which imposes no state level restrictions, it simply makes the ones states might put in place effective.
No, but people do drive down the highway and kill entire families at a much higher rate than school shootings from things like Jello shots. Or are you really that regime blind and it has to happen in a school cafeteria?
At 10:55 p.m. on May 14, 1988, Larry Wayne Mahoney, a drunk driver in a pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction on aninterstate highway in a rural, unincorporated area of Carroll County, Kentucky collided head-on with a gasoline-powered former school bus which was in use as a church bus. The initial crash was exacerbated when the gasoline from the ruptured fuel tank of the bus ignited immediately after impact, which also blocked the front loading door. Difficulties encountered by the victims attempting to evacuate the crowded bus quickly in the smoke and darkness through the only other designated exit, the rear emergency door, resulted in the death of 27 and injuries of 34 others. Six passengers escaped without significant injury, while Mahoney also sustained injuries.
Driving is an economically crucial activity, and far more people would suffer or even die from the decline in productivity if driving were to be eliminated. The same cannot be said for gun ownership. I think insulting me rather than addressing the topic helps your credibility though.
Gun deaths from non-suicide are about 10k to 12k and assault weapons account for less than 300 of those deaths. That is literally what we’re arguing about, less than 300 people a year.
I wonder how many times guns have prevented robberies and home crimes and all the great benefits that they are supposed to provide. I’m not sure where one would get that statistic, but it would be useful to have in order to compare with the number of gun-related fatalities and injuries. Is it 10,000 or more? Is it 100,000? Is it 100? I honestly don’t know.
I’m sure there are some times where a non-police officer or professional security officer brandishing a gun convinced a burgler, murderer, or potential rapist to change their minds. Though we saw last week that a crowbar seems to work pretty well, too.
I didn’t say we should ban driving, I said we should ban alcohol which leads to drunk driving and a slew of other social costs that far outweigh gun usage. Failure to comprehend simple sentences or even correctly identify the debate you’re in really helps your credibility though.
I declare victory over Ohai. Easier than expected TBH.
More seriously, the “guns necessary for self defense argument”, while on paper legitimate, doesn’t make a lot of sense given that the areas most affected by gun violence (minority heavy urban centers) aren’t the ones that are in favor of guns. It’s not people in East STL, DC, South Side Chicago, or the Bronx that support looser gun laws. It’s usually white, rural and suburban conservatives who live far from the action that are the most vocal supporters.
