Pensions Are Easy

.

Is there a formula for actual return on plan assets?

At first I thought it was: ending plan assets - beginning plan assets +/- cash contributions/withdrawals.

This seemed easier than remembering to add back currency translation effects, plan amendments, effect of acquisitions/etc… and that formula worked for Example 8 in reading 23.

But EOCQ #11 states that it is: expected return + actuarial gains/losses

How should I be thinking about this?

Could you please send to: roger.k.stein@gmail.com?

Much appreciated!
